Wilmer Flores has always been ahead of kids his own age. At 6, he taught himself to hit. At 14, he had an agent and was playing professional baseball on the weekends in Venezuela.
The day he turned 16, the minimum age when a Major League Baseball team can sign an international player, Flores inked a contract and received a $750,000 signing bonus from the New York Mets organization.
Now 18 years old, the slick-fielding shortstop, in his third year in the organization, is considered the Mets' No. 2 prospect by Baseball America.
Tonight, Flores will be in Savannah's starting lineup when the Sand Gnats open the season against the West Virginia Power at 7:05 in Grayson Stadium.
