LAST GAME: The B-Mets put 11 runs on Altoona last night, the most allowed by the Curve this season, en route to an 11-6 victory at Blair County Ballpark. Kirk Nieuwenhuis led the way with a perfect, 4-4 night with three RBI and three runs scored. Sean Ratliff added four RBI, three of which came courtesy of his seventh home run of the season, an opposite-field blast off Tim Alderson in the second inning. Alderson was charged with a season-worst eight earned runs over three-plus innings and took his fifth loss of the season. Salomon Manriquez and Josh Satin also managed three hits as Binghamton chalked up 17 hits, one short of season-high. Mark Cohoon made the start for the B-Mets and offered up four innings of two-run work before the bullpen took over. Dylan Owen struggled, allowing four runs over an inning-plus. However, Edgar Ramirez brought his best with two, shutout innings to pick up his fifth win. Derrick Ellison finished it out with two, hitless innings to notch his second save.

STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Chris Schwinden will make his 10th appearance tonight. He is coming off his best start to date, a complete-game, seven-inning shutout inning of
to beat Portland July 2 in Game 1 of a twin bill at NYSEG Stadium. The right-hander carried a perfect game into the seventh giving up a hit to start the inning. Schwinden is 4-5 with a 4.53 ERA over 45.2 innings. He was named a 2010 Florida State League Mid-Season All-Star after his promotion to Double-A. Schwinden opened the year with St. Lucie (High-A) and went 3-0 with a 1.83 ERA over 34.1 innings. He spent most of 2009 with Savannah (Low-A) where he was 9-6 with a 3.28 ERA over 115.1 innings. Schwinden was the Mets’ 22nd round selection in the June 2008 draft out of Fresno Pacific University.

LHP Rudy Owens gets the call for his 17th start of the year tonight for the Curve. He has won back-to-back starts, including his last one at Reading July 2 when he fired six innings of one-run work with eight strikeouts. Owens is 8-3 with a 2.66 ERA over 94.2 innings in 2010. He ranks fourth in the Eastern League in ERA, third in wins, first in WHIP (0.96) and third in average against (.212). Owens was named the South Atlantic League’s most outstanding pitcher last season when he went 10-1 with a 1.70 ERA over 19 starts (100.2 IP) with West Virginia (Low-A). The Pirates took him in the 28th round of the June 2006 draft and signed him as a draft and follow.
