Blake Forsythe:
7-15 from: - link - Blake Forsythe is a patient collegiate catcher from the University of Tennessee. Forsythe attended high school at Christian Brothers High School in Memphis, which has a long history of baseball excellence. His brother Logan attended Christian Brothers before going on to be a star at Arkansas, ending up as a supplemental first round pick in 2008 for the Padres. Blake is a different player than Logan, having been behind the plate for some time. He was well-known as a high school player, but he scared off enough teams to go undrafted, and he headed to Tennessee. He didn’t start right away, instead being a defensive replacement and backup catcher in 2008, but he established himself as a starter with an excellent sophomore year. He went to be a catcher for Team USA last summer with Miami’s Yasmani Grandal, and he was thought to be a potential late first round pick entering the spring. However, he’s hit a big slump, only having broken out very late in the year. His tools predict a potential starting catcher at the Major League level, though, so he’ll get his shot. His hit tool is below-average, as he has major troubles with breaking balls, but his raw power is above-average, and he should be an adequate hitter to stick as a starter. He’s a below-average runner, but that doesn’t affect his play. His defense is solid, as his arm is above-average and he’s an adequate receiver, but he has struggled at times with his receiving, as well. He should go somewhere in the third to sixth round range, and he’s likely to sign for slot money.
$500mil Savings for Steinbrenners
7-14 from: - link - What’s also ridiculous is that the timing of Steinbrenner’s death makes such a difference to his heirs. I’m sure if you asked any of them, they’d give anything for one more hour of life. But I’m also sure that they won’t complain that their inheritances will be much larger because Steinbrenner died this year and not a year earlier or later. You see, 2010 is that magical year when, for one year only, the estate tax disappears. Had Steinbrenner died in 2009 when the estate tax was 45 percent on wealth over $3.5 million, the New York Times estimates his heirs would’ve lost about $500 million to federal taxes on an estate estimated by Forbes to be worth $1.1 billion.
Cory Vaughn:
7-14-10 from: - link - Cory Vaughn, for those looking for signs of hope in his strong performance for Brooklyn, homered off a pitcher throwing 85-87, and walked in another plate appearance where none of the four balls came within a foot of the strike zone. He's just a 21-year-old college player faring well against younger competition.
Hisanori Takahashi:
7-12 from: - link - TRDMB’s 2nd Annual Mets First Half Report Card - Hisanori Takahashi - C+: Tough to gauge…seems as though, with his mediocre velocity, everything has to be working perfectly for him to win…has had many good games, but has also had some clunkers…may indeed have greatest value as 6th/7th inning bullpen arm; the jury remains out on his overall MLB ability.
Kyle Allen:
7-14 from: - link - Allen seems to have caught 'Mets Pitching Prospect Syndrome'. Symptoms are walks, hit batsmen and a general lack of command; it's going around quite a bit this year. For Allen, it's been worse than others as his totals for walks and strikeouts have basically mirrored each other all year long. Even worse, his K/9 has tumbled as batters quickly realized Allen's command is shot. In his last ten starts he has allowed multiple walks in seven of them. Considered a breakout candidate by many coming into the season, Allen has taken a huge step backward this year against more advanced hitting.
