Cutnpaste: - J.J. Putz, Nick Evans, Carlos Beltran, Luis Castillo... and Ex-Mets on the Move

J.J. Putz:
7-20 from: - link  - J.J. Putz came into 2010 on the heels of an injurious and all around disastrous 2009 season with the Mets. Having thrown just 29.1 innings, Putz’s strikeout rate fell from a three year average close to 11 per 9 to just 5.8. His walk rate also stayed at his 2008 level in the mid to upper 5s, which left him with an equal number of walks as strikeouts in 2009. The projection systems did see much improvement for Putz in 2010. CHONE and ZiPS put him at a 4.29 and 4.24 FIP respectively. FanGraphs readers were a lot more optimistic with a 3.49 predicted FIP, but even they are being blown out of the water by Putz’s actual performance that is right out of his 2006 model of success. The strikeouts are back to 10.6, the walks are back down to 1.5 and the high ground ball rates are back as well, keeping the home runs infrequent. In total, Putz has already thrown 35.2 innings with just a 2.00 FIP. He’s been one of the very best relievers in baseball.

Nick Evans:

7-20 from: - http://myworldofbaseball.com/wordpress/?m=201007 - Nick Evans was playing third and in his first at bat stroked a ball over the centerfield fence. Despite getting two hits on the day, he just doesn’t look like a ballplayer. He did not show an arm tonight that would be adequate for third base in a long term assignment

Carlos Beltran:

7-20 from: - http://benmaller.com/tag/mlb  - As the Mets began their first series in Arizona since the state announced a controversial immigration law, Carlos Beltran voiced a strong objection to the policy, and said he might skip next year’s All-Star Game in Phoenix if selected to participate. “I’m against this law,” Beltran told the Daily News. “There are a lot of Latinos who come here and try to have a better future. It’s hard for the people who come here from Mexico to this country.” The Mets’ center fielder joined the growing group of Major League Baseball stars to raise a public objection to the looming law, which would allow police to demand proof of citizenship on the mere suspicion of illegal immigrant status

Luis Castillo:

7-20 from: - link  - Second Base: Luis Castillo (.258 TAv, 0.2 WARP) and Alex Cora (.215 TAv, -1.3 WARP), Mets - Out since June 4 with heel problems, Castillo returned Monay night, but he's 34 years old, fragile, and a liability in the field, with just one season worth substantially more than one win out of the last four, and -38 FRAA in that span. Cora has been an atrocious backup, nine runs below average at the keystone in addition to the damage he's done with the stick. Young Ruben Tejada (.211, -0.2 WARP) hasn't been of much help either, though at least he played acceptable shortstop in Jose Reyes' absence. - Remedy (?): The Marlins' Dan Uggla may be available, but between his hefty price tag, an intradivision rivalry, and the Rockies' interest in him, it's unlikely he'll be heading to Queens. A better fit would be the Diamondbacks' Kelly Johnson. After losing his job with the Braves last year, he's rebounded to hit a robust .282/.376/.503 for the Snakes, who are in selling mode after firing manager A.J. Hinch and GM Josh Byrnes on July 2. Johnson is making just $2.35 million this year, so he'll command a higher price in prospects, but he'd be a legitimate boon to the lineup. His glove (-8 FRAA) might need a caddy, however.

Ex-Mets on the Move:

The Chicago White Sox signed OF Jeremy Reed… the Cincinnati Reds released P Jon Adkins… the Florida Marlins released RP Armondo Benitez… the St. Louis Cards recalled P Evan MacClane
