Kyle Drabek worked six, shutout innings and limited the B-Mets to just five hits in Binghamton’s 10-2 loss to New Hampshire Friday night at rainy NYSEG Stadium. The loss ended a three-game winning streak.
The Fisher Cats pounced on starter Eric Niesen in the first inning. Darin Mastroianni led off with a clean single to center and was advanced to second when Niesen walked Jonathan Diaz. With Travis Snider at the plate, Mastroianni and Diaz executed a double steal and an errant throw from catcher Mike Nickeas pushed Mastroianni across to give New Hampshire a 1-0 lead. Diaz advanced to third on the throw. After Snider struck out former B-Mets third baseman Shawn Bowman laced a single to left, plating Diaz, upping the lead to two.
Niesen got himself into trouble again in the second filling the bases to start the inning courtesy of a pair of singles and walk. However, the southpaw responded by retiring the next three to strand the bases full without permitting a run.
Meanwhile, Drabek cruised into the fifth having faced three over the minimum, but allowed the first two to reach in his fifth inning of work. Jose Coronado attempted to bunt the runners up, but Drabek fielded the bunt and fired to third to force the lead runner, stunting the inning. The right-hander emerged unscathed, thwarting Binghamton’s best scoring threat against him.
New Hampshire (53-35) broke the game open in the sixth with a seven-run rally off reliever Scott Shaw. Brian Jeroloman tallied the first two runs with a two-run shot down the line in right. Shaw allowed the next three to reach, loading the bases for Snider, who roped a sacrifice fly to deep center, pushing across the third run. Bowman struck for the biggest blow next with a three-run homer down the line to left that crept over the wall for his 16th homer of the season. The Fisher Cats added another run after Shaw departed to take a 9-0 lead. Shaw was charged with seven earned runs over 2/3 of an inning.
Binghamton (47-41) tallied both its runs in the seventh after Drabek departed. Adrian Martin replaced him and walked Raul Reyes to start his outing. D.J. Wabick followed with a double down the first-base line, plating Reyes from first to break up the shutout. Wabick would score three batters later on a Kirk Nieuwenhuis sacrifice fly, closing the gap to 9-2. Wabick led all B-Mets hitters with a 3-4 performance, including two doubles.
