D'Angelo Jimenez RBI-single in the bottom of the ninth inning snapped a tie game and gave the Red Wings at 5-4 walk-off victory over Buffalo, Sunday afternoon at Frontier Field.
The Red Wings trailed most of the game before scoring two runs in the eighth inning and one more in the ninth to hand the Bisons a tough loss to think about during the three-day All-Star Break.
It was the second straight game in Rochester that the Herd led in the eighth inning only to let the advantage slip away. On Saturday night, they recovered with six runs in the ninth inning of an 11-6 victory.
Sunday's tilt seemed in control as Buffalo built a 4-2 lead. But Tobi Stoner, working in relief of Mets' hurler Oliver Perez, walked Wilson Ramos to lead off the eighth inning and allowed an RBI-double to Dustin Martin. Bison-killer Trevor Plouffe followed with another double off Brian Bruney to pull Rochester even.
Bruney then allowed a Jose Morales single and walked Matt Macri and Ramos in the ninth inning. With the bases loaded and only one out, Jimenez chopped a 1-2 pitch from Mike O'Connor over the third base bag for the game-winning hit.
The game began with all the attention on Mets' Perez. The southpaw was making his third rehab start -first with the Bisons -since New York placed the hurler on the disabled list on June 5 with patella tendinitis in his right knee.
The good news for Perez was he allowed just one run in five innings of work and left in position to earn the victory. He wiggled in and out of trouble as the Bisons built a 3-1 advantage. Perez's outing, however, wasn't easy. He made an error and tossed a wild pitch in the first inning as Rochester got on the board first. He hit a batter, walked another and tossed a second wild pitch in the second, but got out of that jam.
Perez also walked a batter in the third, fourth and fifth innings and hit a second batter in the fourth. He finished his outing with 52 of his 100 pitches going for strikes. He walked five and struck out three, with two hit batters and two wild pitches.
The Bisons scored a run in the second on Lucas Duda's 27th RBI in 24 games. Justin Turner homered in the fifth and Mike Cervenak plated a run in the sixth. The Bisons scored a fourth run in the top of the eighth on single, a walk and a Rochester error.
