Mike Pelfrey:
On Saturday, Pelfrey started out nicely with two 95 MPH fastballs according to the MLB Gameday pitch f/x numbers. In the end, this was his progression on fastballs over the night: 95, 95, 93, 92, 93, 91, 91, 92, 90, 89, 96, 94, 94, 89, 93. That averages out to 92.5 MPH (math!). Ah, so the dead arm phase is over? Let's look at his 'bad velocity' games this year. Looking at the chart above, he's had about six starts with poor velocity, where he was closer to 90 MPH than 93 on average. As far as I can tell from the picture above, starts #1, 5, 7, 8, 13, and 14 were ones where Pelfrey had velo problems. In those starts, he averaged 6.5 innings, 2.2 earned runs, four strikeouts and two-and-a-half walks. He had 9.2 groundballs to 7.3 fly balls. He gave up one homer. Taken in total, his average start this year has lasted 6.4 innings and he's given up 2.4 earned runs. He's struck out 3.9 and walked 2.2. He's had 9.3 groundballs to 6 fly balls. I don't really see a difference here, other than perhaps the effectiveness of his sinker is helped by a better fastball velocity (better GB/FB ratio overall than in bad velo starts). - link
Bob Sheppard:
“I remember walking in from the bullpen at Yankee Stadium during my major league debut and hearing Bob announce my name. I thought it was the greatest thing. Three years out of high school, and I’m in Yankee Stadium with Bob Sheppard announcing my name. I had arrived! He was a legend who went about his job with a quiet sense of dignity, and we will never see someone of his stature again.” – Al Leiter – link
Jeff Francoeur:
Jeff Francoeur is used to being in the lineup. When he was 22, he played in all 162 games for the Atlanta Braves. As a 23-year-old, he did the same. Never in his six-year major league career has Francoeur not been an every-day player. But with Carlos Beltran returning to the Mets, the Mets now have four outfielders for three positions, and Francoeur will have to get used to coming off the bench more often than not. Manager Jerry Manuel met with Francoeur for about 30 minutes Sunday to discuss what Beltran’s activation would mean for his role on the team. Both Manuel and Francoeur described the meeting as very positive. - link
Johan Santana:
7-12 from: - link - TRDMB’s 2nd Annual Mets First Half Report Card - Johan Santana - B+: Recently seeming to shed many doubts about his abilities… perhaps pitch-tipping and negative publicity combined to cause his string of poor starts…regardless, remains a warrior in top shape who will continue to be a valuable top-of-the-rotation starter for the Mets.
Jerry Garcia:
7-11 from: - link - JERRY GARCIA's GRATEFUL DEAD bandmates will honour the 15th anniversary of the rocker's death by performing the STAR SPANGLED BANNER at the San Francisco Giants' 9 August (10) baseball game. The sports team, who will dedicate the game against the Chicago Cubs to Garcia, will welcome Bob Weir and Mickey Hart to their stadium for Jerry Garcia Tribute Night. Garcia and his band were a massive part of the San Francisco hippie scene in the late 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.
