Allan Dykstra, Gustavo Chacin, Doug Flynn, Travis Taijeron, DPL

Alan Dykstra:

7-17-11: - There’s been an increase of positive chatter regarding 1B Alan Dykstra. Everyone has written off this guy because he has a high strikeout rate, but let’s look at the numbers over his three year professional career (yes, he’s only 24 folks): Batting average: 2009/A-Ball: .226… 2010/A+ ball: .241… 2011/AA: .274. Slugging: .375… .438… .460. And OPS: .772… .810… .863. It looks like he will be a 20/80 guy in AA this year, which ain’t that bad for someone the team got for Eddie Kunz.

Gustavo Chacin:

The Mets continue to fill AAA slots with AAAA players that once played for one of the 3-Veeps. This time, it’s 30-year old LHRP Gustavo Chacin , who came up with the Toronto organization (J.P.) and also played for Toronto, Philadelphia, and Houston. So far this year, he went 3-6, 5.13 in 27-G, 9-ST for AAA-Oklahoma City. Had a killer year in 2004 (AA): 16-2, 2.86, and turned heads in 2005 for parent club Toronto (13-9, 3.72). He’ll fill the pen slot left open when the Mets recalled Ryota Igarashi. Frankly, no one in Binghamton was ready or deserving of a promotion.

Doug Flynn:

1975-1985 (Mets/Expos/Reds/Rangers/Tigers) - Doug Flynn had the unfortunate luck of being acquired as part of the "Midnight Massacre" —the flurry of transactions that in 1977 sent Tom Seaver and Dave Kingman from the Mets for a series of spare parts. Flynn, a utility infielder, had more in common with Seaver than with Kingman as a hitter. He was a terrible offensive player in all the classic ways: he never got on base, ran poorly, had zero power. Nor did Flynn qualify as "good hit, no field." Despite a perplexing Gold Glove Award in 1988, Flynn consistently performed below replacement level at second base, shortstop, and third base. - http://deadspin.com/5820622/the-100-worst-baseball-players-of-all-time-a-celebration-part-2

Travis Taijeron:

7-14-11: - http://www.amazinavenue.com/2011/7/11/2270752/mets-minors-road-report-binghamton-7-9-brooklyn-7-10  - Pronounced "Tyrone" apparently, which means I have been adding like a half dozen unnecessary syllables to it in my head up until this point. Division II pick from Cal Poly Pomona who raked this year in school and has been hitting well in the NYPL so far. Problem is he is a thickly built dude, and not really fast, so I don’t think he stays in CF as he moves up. Didn’t really see his arm or range tested at the game, but on the one ball he had to track down deep he took a weird route to and got turned around. Would be a small sleeper for me if he could stay in center.
