Brandon Moore fired six innings of one-run work to beat Portland for the third time this season in Binghamton’s 7-2 victory over the Sea Dogs at Hadlock Field Tuesday night. Moore is 3-0 with a 3.22 ERA over four starts against Portland this season. Jordany Valdespin posted a three-hit performance and Brahiam Maldonado added four RBI to lead the B-Mets’ 11-hit attack.
Binghamton (39-58) climbed on top for good in the second inning against starter Michael Lee. Salomon Manriquez stroked a one-out double over the head of centerfielder Jeremy Hazelbaker to reach scoring position. Raul Reyes chased him home instantaneously with a double into the left-centerfield gap.
The B-Mets added to their one-run lead in the third. Valdespin doubled to left-center and took third when Hazelbaker misplayed it off the wall. Josh Satin came next and drove him home with a groundout to second.
Lee exited to the loss after three innings. He allowed two runs on three hits to take his fifth loss of the season.
Junichi Tazawa replaced him and gave up another run in the fourth. Manriquez led off with his second double of the game. This one plugged the gap in right-center. Raul Reyes sacrificed him to third and Maldonado brought him home with a sacrifice fly to right, making it 3-0.
Moore, who cruised through five innings in scoreless fashion, finally allowed a run in the sixth. After getting the first two hitters, he gave up back-to-back doubles to Tim Federowicz and Oscar Tejeda to push across the Sea Dogs lone run against him. Moore departed to the win after the frame. He allowed six hits and struck out four for his seventh win of the year.
Portland (37-58) got four solid innings of relief out of Tazawa, who at one point retired 10 men consecutively. Kyle Fernandes entered the two-run game in the eighth and was greeted rudely. Satin reached on a single to start the frame. Allan Dyksta moved him to third with a double to left. After Dusty Ryan struck out, Fernandes intentionally walked Manriquez to face the left-handed hitting Raul Reyes. The move paid off as Reyes flied out to shallow right. However, Maldonado punished the southpaw with a bases-clearing triple to right, pushing the lead to 6-1.
The Sea Dogs got a run back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single from Federowicz, but saw that run reciprocated in the ninth on a sac fly from Dykstra.
Josh Stinson worked two innings in relief to hold it for Moore and Ricky Brooks worked a 1-2-3 ninth to secure the victory.
