The St. Lucie Mets improved to 15-9 on the second half of the season with a 6-0 shutout win over the Clearwater Threshers Tuesday night at Digital Domain Park. The 6-0 victory puts the Mets at 53-41 overall and was their fourth win in a row.
Kyle Allen got the start for the Mets and turned in his best outing of the season. Allen shut down the Clearwater offense scattering six hits over eight shutout innings. The Mets gave Allen all the run support he would need in the first inning. Pedro Zapata singled to lead off the first, stole second and scored on a wild pitch giving the Mets a 1-0 lead after one inning. After striking out in his first at bat, David Wright singled to lead off the third inning and came around to score on a Wilmer Flores fielder’s choice making it 2-0. St. Lucie put the game out of reach in the fifth inning. Wright doubled in a run and RBI singles by Jefry Marte and Francisco Pena made it 6-0 which would be the final.
Kyle Allen got the win improving to 4-5 with his stellar eight inning performance. Allen struck out six, did not walk a single batter and allowed only four batters to reach scoring position for Clearwater. St. Lucie had another good day at the plate as a team. Only one starter did not record a hit but each reached base at least once. David Wright led the Mets going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI in his fifth rehab appearance with St. Lucie. Jefry Marte had two hits, drove in a run and scored once and Cesar Puello and Francisco Pena each had two hits with Pena driving in a run in the win. Eric Niesen pitched a perfect ninth to close out the victory.
St. Lucie looks for the sweep of the four-game series with the Threshers Wednesday night at Digital Domain Park. Scott Moviel will get the start for the Mets. The right handed Moviel is 4-7 with a 5.42 ERA in 17 starts this season. Moviel has struck out 45 while walking 30 with opposing batters hitting .329 against him in 86.1 innings of work.
