D1 - Tuesday Recaps

·         Campbell defeated the Duke Blue Devils for the second consecutive game of the series by a score 10-4 on Tuesday afternoon at Jack Coombs Field on the Duke campus. The Camels move to 3-1 on the season while Duke falls to 1-3.[i]

·         Taylor Johnson's two-run seventh inning double broke open a close ball game and helped Furman defeat Presbyterian, 7-5, in baseball action Tuesday afternoon at Latham Stadium.  The win evened Furman's record at 2-2 on the year while the loss dropped PC to 0-4 on the young campaign.[ii]

·         A stellar offensive outing from Joey Rapp and steady pitching from Shelby Aulds carried the ULM baseball team to a 9-3 win over Tulane Tuesday afternoon in the opening game of 2012 at Warhawk Field.[iii]

·         Carlos Rodon and Ethan Ogburn combined for a shutout and the Wolfpack offense provided a 10-run explosion in the bottom of the eighth to carry NC State to a 10-0 win over UNC Wilmington Tuesday evening at Doak Field at Dail Park[iv]

I asked 6-4 junior Ogburn  how the game went for him and he was candid:

The 6th I came in just trying to pound the zone. The first guy went quitely grounding out to 3rd. The next hitter had a good at bat but ended up grounding to first on a fastball inside. Finished off the inning on a strikeout looking. The 7th I was fortunate enough to miss a few bats for 2 K's. Diaz made a nice play at short on a groundball to his left to end the inning. In the 8th Trea Turner made a really good play on a groundball down the 3B line to start the inning. The next hitter tried to drag bunt. He didn't quite push it hard enough. Ceincin at 1st made a nice play on my throw. The last out of that inning, Brett Austin did a nice job blocking a curveball in the dirt to tag the guy to record the strikeout. The 9th went smooth. The first hitter went down on 3 straight pitches. The next guy grounded straight back to me on a first pitch curveball. Finally, the last out of the game Brett was able to frame a borderline fastball well enough to get the call for strike 3.

Ethan is a converted starter that went 4-2, 3.18, in 12-appearances out of the pen last season. We’ll keep an eye on him.

·         The Auburn baseball team pounded out 20 hits, nine of which went for extra bases, and its pitching staff held Alcorn State to just four hits as it picked up a 22-0 win on Tuesday afternoon at Plainsman Park. Creede Simpson was 4-for-4 at the plate with two doubles while Patrick Savage and Kody Ortman both hit home runs as Auburn evened its record at 2-2.[v]

·         Georgia Southern University’s junior OF Victor Roach is off to a fast start in defending his Division One home run title. He’s hit two already in the first three games this past weekend. His bat has been compared to people like Jayson Heywood and Ryan Howard and I just have this feeling that he will be gone in one of the five top picks. There are a lot of scouts that wish he played for a team in a harder division, but frankly, a bat like tis only comes around once in a while.

·         Dropping on the mock lists is RHP Lance McCullers Jr., who started the off season as the top pitcher in the June draft. Most scouts now project him as a reliever/closer, which means he hasn’t developed any plus secondary pitchers to go along with his 100mph fastball.

·         Speed Checks:

o   Harvard-Westlake Academy RHP Lucas Giolito – 95-96 first three innings – 93-95 to end

o   Vanderbilt RHP Tyler Beede – 89-91, 76-curve, 80-81 change

o   Stanford LHP Brett Mooneyham – 88-92, 79-slider, 84-change

o   Vanderbilt LHRP Phillip Pfeifer – 88-91, 73-76 curve, 84-change

o   Stanford RHRP David Schmidt – 92-94

o   Rice RHRP J.T. Chargois - 98
