Press Release: MEDICAL UPDATE ON SETH LUGO

FLUSHING, N.Y., February 13, 2021 – A MRI has revealed that RHP Seth Lugo has a loose body in his right elbow and will undergo surgery on Tuesday February 16 at HSS Florida.

While going through his normal throwing progression during the offseason, a bone spur had broken off at some point. Inflammation that wouldn’t subside recently caused Seth to inform the Mets medical staff of the situation and they ordered an MRI which took place on Friday, Feb. 12.

Mets Medical Director Dr. David Altchek will perform the procedure. Lugo will not throw for six weeks before assessing and transitioning into a throwing program.

Is this the condition that we've read about that prevented him from doing back-to-backs in the last few years?

Obviously this "break off" is new, but there was something that didn't need surgery "yet".

Wonder if he could've gotten the MRI sooner as a precaution

Bill, Lugo has pitched for the past 3 years or so with a partial ulnar ligament tear, but skipped the TJ surgery and it has worked for him well so far. This chip thing is different. Probably the result of his high curve ball spin rate.

A lot of guys without high curveball spin rates get bone chips.

This injury underscores the fact that Sandy has done a miserable job with the bullpen this offseason. Taking a golden opportunity to turn it into a strength and basically doing nothing besides signing May and some unproven depth pieces.

A lot of high-quality names are by now off the board, unfortunately.

Signing Wilson is an obvious correction.

Rosenthal comes with significant risk. I'm uncertain about him.

We dumped Brach three days ago. BTW, on Brach's struggles last season: a friend reminded me that he suffered from a bad case of COVID in Spring, missed the first few weeks of the season, and was never right. I wonder if that contributed to it? At the time, we didn't know much about recovery rates and lingering effects.

There are decent arms in the fringes, but I'd like to see the addition of pitchers who have experienced full, successful seasons in the majors. It should have happened long ago.

And that's the balancing act as a fan and critic of the Mets: 1) That you can believe that this has been one of the best off-seasons in the history of the franchise; and 2) That it was also a disappointment in many ways, representing missed opportunities.

Lastly: That Scott is our "acting" GM is so pathetic. He was brought in to oversee research and development and now . . . he's meeting new people and trying to do a job that he's wholly unprepared for. I mean, sure, maybe he's a smart guy. But he's not qualified for the position, clearly.

Si it's a different issue. Thanks, Tom.

If Brach isn't claimed and becomes a FA, we can still sign him to a MnL deal with ST invite, can't we?

Yes...if he is not claimed, think he can go to Syracuse Roster or be released, his choice.
