Justin Colon

Montverde (Fla.) Academy SS

Ht: 6-2 | Wt: 175 | B-T: R-R

Commit/Drafted: Missouri

Age At Draft: 18.2

Colon is the top prep Florida infielder in a 2021 class that’s heavy on pitchers and outfielders in the state. A product of the same Montverde (Fla.) Academy program that has produced shortstops Francisco Lindor and Nander De Sedas, Colon is the next in line. A slick defender with plus arm strength, scouts with history on the Missouri commit expected him to be a top prospect for years now. He has soft hands and a chance for 70-grade arm strength in the future. The only tool that could limit him from playing shortstop at the next level is his running ability. He has turned in average and below-average run times this summer and some scouts think he could wind up moving to third, but for now his actions, instincts and arm are more than enough to stick up the middle. Offensively, Colon has above-average raw power now that could turn into plus in the future as he fills out a lean, 6-foot-2, 175-pound frame. His pure hit tool might be the lightest tool in Colon’s box and he can get a bit pull-happy at times, with inconsistent feel for the barrel. Colon’s defensive ability and power potential have him solidly among the top five rounds now, but improved offensive ability this fall and next spring could vault him up higher.

217. Justin Colon - SS

Bio:

Height: 6-2

Weight: 175 lbs

Hits/Throws: R-R

Hometown: Clermont, FL

School: Montverde Academy

An athletic shortstop with a big arm and some positive projection in his 6-foot-2 frame. He's rangy at short, but he's more agile than fast, using good jumps and instincts to make plays in the hole. A polished defensive player that will get the "glove-first" moniker, though possibly unfairly. He has a simple right handed swing geared toward poolside contact. While he lacks loud contact now, as he grows into his frame he should add more impact at contact.

6-5-20 - PBR -

Positional Profile: SS

Body: 6-foot-3, 180-pounds. Has a long, tall, athletic frame, with room to fill in.

Defense: Fields off center of body, with a two handed gather, showing soft hands, with fluid footwork playing through the ball with tempo.

Arm: RH. INF - 92 mph. Has a strong, short, over the top arm slot.

Hit: RHH. Starts with a slightly open setup, with a wide balanced base. Knee bend/heel up, toe down lift. Hands load back and up.  Swings downhill, long bat path, with natural lift getting extension through swing.

Power: 85 mph exit velocity from the tee. Average bat speed, looks for a power approach to CF.

Run: 7.08 runner in the 60. Runs with high, choppy, quick steps.

PG -

Justin Javier Colon Jaime is a 2021 SS with a 6-2 175 lb. frame from Clermont, FL who attends Montverde Academy. Tall and projectable athletic build. 6.87 runner, plays much faster on the infield on defense, very light on his feet with plus range to both sides, nimble and natural footwork, soft hands fielding out front, has all the actions, huge raw arm strength and can throw from multiple arm slots comfortably. One of the top defensive players in the 2021 class. Right handed hitter, hits from a wide base with a simple timer and swing path, shows good leverage and bat speed to the pull side and can create some jump off the barrel, handled the barrel well, has really improved with the bat since last seen and has further physical projection as a hitter.

Mack's spin -

Good prospect. Excellent defensive skills and is progressing into a decent hitter.

Only downside is lack of speed.

I have him somewhere in the 6th-9th round range.

Talking Chop -

Justin Colon, SS - The best defensive show of the weekend came from Justin Colon, who put on a show during infield practice. Colon is just so natural and smooth, with the actions to be an impact defender at short. That’s not all Colon can do, as he makes solid hard contact at the plate as well. Colon is a glove first shortstop, but he isn’t a guy that won’t be able to hold his own with the bat.

With an arm like that, Colon ought to be a two-way player
