Joe Rock
Mack's spin -
Rock is the kind of pitcher that is hard to pass on in the 4th round.A 3-pitch mix with a T95 fastball. Needs to cut back on the walks.
Yes, his conference competitionisn't top, but his current stat line is.
I have him as my 14th LHP.

Fourth Round (118th Overall) – Joe Rock, LHP, Ohio
With their fourth round pick, the Miami Marlins select left-handed pitcher Joe Rock.
Joe Rock is a tall, skinny left-handed pitcher out of Ohio University with a three-pitch mix. Rock’s top two pitches are his fastball and slider. His fastball sits 90-93 mph and tops out at 95 with riding life. Rock’s slider sits in the mid-80s which kind of acts like a slurve. Rock also has an effective changeup that misses bats and gets weak contact.
At 6’6” 200 pounds, Rock has plenty of room to fill in his extra-long frame. During the 2021 season, Rock has a made nine starts for the Bobcats. He has 7-1 record with a 2.09 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 12.1 K/9 and three complete games.
4-7-21 - pittsburgh post gazette -
Joe Rock consistently throws his four-seam fastball in the 92-94 mph range and can hit as high as 97. His slider’s velocity sits in the mid-to-low 80s with a sweeping break, and his change-up has continued to develop as he has gotten more comfortable with it. Above all, Rock’s control is what has stood out the most. He holds a 51-12 strikeout-to-walk ratio this season. In his no-hitter, he threw 54 of 89 pitches for strikes.

Joe Rock was a hot name without much of a track record heading into 2021. But to start the season, he has done nothing but impress and showcase plus stuff, oh yeah and a 12 K no-hitter vs Morehead State. The southpaw, has fairly clean, repeatable mechanics and a ton of projection left in his 6’6 180 lbs lanky frame. Already touches up to 96 with a filthy Slider that shows plus often, both of which he can use as a strikeout pitch. Also working in a Changeup. There is a bit of development left here and likely will be a slower mover as he develops more as a starter, but could move quicker as a left-handed option out of the pen. Similar to Chris Sale.

Joe Rock, LHP, Ohio (No. 87)
3 G, 18 IP, 1.00 ERA, 30 K, 6 BB
The walk total Rock has amassed through three starts is the big number.
After walking 5.6 batters per nine during his 2019 season with Ohio, Rock has improved that rate (3.0 BB/9) through his first three starts this season. Scouts believed he needed to show better strike-throwing ability this spring to shoot up draft boards and so far … he’s done just that.
Rock threw a seven-inning no-hitter against Morehead State during week two and is coming off a six-inning, 12-strikeout game against Wisconsin-Milwaukee in week three. Rock’s fastball has been up to 96 mph this spring, but averages 90-92 with sinking life out of a sidearm slot. His go-to secondary is a low-80s slider that has sweeping action and is a potential plus offering according to evaluators. Rock has also infrequently flashed a changeup that shows some solid fading life in the low 80s, but he’s largely been a fastball/slider pitcher to this point.
If he keeps up throwing strikes at a high rate, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Rock go off the board within the first two rounds.

Joe Rock is a young-for-the-class 6'6" lefty that sits comfortably in the low 90's with deception, touches higher, and adds a swing and miss slider. That alone makes scouts sit up, but he had a career 5.19 ERA and 41/37 K/BB at Ohio coming into the season. No in-game track record

Joe Rock, LHP, Ohio (No. 87)
7 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K (89 pitches)
Rock was a big riser last summer and fall after showing a fastball up to 95 mph and a slider that got plus future projections. The big question with him was a lack of track record with Ohio and questions about his strike-throwing after he walked 37 batters in 59 innings (5.6 BB/9) in 2019. Through two starts in 2021 he’s been impressive and was a weekend standout in week two after no-hitting Morehead State over seven innings. While it’s only 12 total innings, his strikeout rate (13.5 K/9) is up and his walk rate is down (3.8 BB/9). Rock’s lower-80s slider has been a weapon against righties and lefties, but is particularly tough against same-side hitters thanks to a low, three-quarter arm slot.

JOE ROCK, LHP, OHIO UNIVERSITY - 7 IP, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K
Rock was a bit of a sleeper headed into the 2021 season, but that secret has since long-dissipated. Rock fired the first no-hitter of the season Friday night, shutting down Morehead State entirely with the exception of two walks.
Rock is off to a fantastic start on the season. In the season opener he went five innings allowing two earned runs on four hits and three walks. He struck out twelve hitters.
Rock will certainly open scouts eyes each time he takes the mound. He looks like a big league starter. At 6-foot-6, 220-pounds, Rock has the prototype high-waist with long levers. The arms and legs do a good job of creating exceptional deception, especially coming from the low three-quarter arm slot Rock possesses. The fastball is heavy, generally sitting at an easy 91-94 mph. He’s been up to 97 in fall practices.
Given the ease of which Rock goes about his business on the mound, most scouts think there’s more velocity coming. He’s received James Paxton comparisons in the past, and I don’t think that’s too far off. You don’t find guys with this frame and ease of motion on the mound every day. Rock certainly has helium on his name and with an impressive spring could find himself in first round conversations in July.

Rock still has significant questions to answer entering the 2021 season but after struggling as a freshman in 2019 with Ohio, he showed enough flashes this summer for teams to get excited about his pro potential and upside. A big-framed, 6-foot-6, 200-pound lefthander, Rock has run his fastball up to 95 mph and has shown enough of a slider for scouts to project the pitch to be above-average or plus in the future. For now, teams are betting on his body and arm strength, but if he wants to solidify his draft stock he will need to perform this spring and show better strike throwing ability. In 59 innings with Ohio as a starter and reliever, Rock pitched to a 5.19 ERA with 41 strikeouts (6.3 K/9) and 37 walks (5.6 BB/9).
