Mets Games Played On This Date: May 4th

Back to back pinch hit HRs for a 1991 win, a win from Rick Reed and Nolan Ryan, and the first time fans chanted “Let’s Go Mets”.  These are just a few of the games played on May 4th.

10 Years ago today: Year: 2011; Game #30; Wednesday;  May 4, NYM 0  Vs. SFG 2 boxscore;  WP: Lincecum;  LP: Capuano;  Save: Wilson;  Time: 03:00; NIGHT; Attendance: 29,333

Baseball Reference: Tim Lincecum has a good night in shutting out the Mets, 2 - 0, at Citi Field. He fans 12 batters in 7 innings for the 29th double-digit strikeout game of his career. That total is the most ever by a Giants pitcher, overtaking Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson who set the previous mark back in the days the franchise played in New York.

20 Years ago today: Year: 2001; Game #28; Friday;  May 4, NYM 4  Vs. ARI 2 boxscore;  WP: Reed;  LP: Batista;  Save: Franco;  Time: 02:51; NIGHT; Attendance: 36,945

Jay Payton went 2 for 4 with a HR and a double.  Rick Reed went 8 innings for the Mets allowing 2 runs on 6 hits with 6 Ks.

30 Years ago today: Year: 1991; Game #23; Saturday;  May 4, NYM 6  Vs. SFG 4 boxscore 12 innings   WP: Schourek;  LP: LaCoss;  Save: Time: 04:13; DAY; Attendance: 38,413

National Pastime.com: At Shea Stadium, Mackey Sasser and Mark Carreon, the first two batters in the ninth inning, both go deep as pinch-hitters off Jeff Brantley to knot the score at four runs apiece in the Mets' eventual 6-4 victory over San Francisco in 12 innings. It is the first time in the 30-year history of the franchise that two pinch-hitters have hit back-to-back round-trippers.

A Howard Johnson two run walk-off HR in the 12th won it for the Mets.

50 Years ago today: Year: 1971; Game #23; Tuesday;  May 4, NYM 2  Vs. CHC 1 boxscore;  WP: Ryan;  LP: Pappas;  Save: Frisella;  Time: 02:47; NIGHT; Attendance: 17,963

Nolan Ryan went 7 innings allowing 1 run on 3 hits to go 3-0 on the young season.  A Bob Aspromonte HR and a Bud Harrelson single drove in the 2 Mets runs.

58 Years ago today: Year: 1963; Game #22; Saturday;  May 4, NYM 4  Vs. SFG 17 boxscore;  WP: O'Dell;  LP: Craig;  Save: Perry;  Time: 02:55; DAY; Attendance: 25,674

National Pastime.com: The first reported use of the familiar refrain "Let's Go Mets" is heard at the Polo Grounds in the bottom of the ninth inning during a rout by San Francisco. With the Amazins' trailing by 13 runs and down to their last out with no one on base, the rallying cry begins to be chanted by some of the 'New Breed,' the affectionate name given the fans of the National League expansion team.

Tough game for Roger Craig who gave up 9 runs on 9 hits – including 5 HRs in 4.1 innings.  Catcher Norm Sherry hit a 3 run HR for the Mets.

Here is the full list of Mets games played on May 4th:

Year: 2019; Game #33; Saturday;  May 4, NYM 3 @ MIL; 4; boxscore; 18 innings   WP: Williams;  LP: Flexen;  Save: Time: 05:22; NIGHT; Attendance: 39,565

Baseball Reference: The longest game in the history of Miller Park goes 18 innings before Ryan Braun ends it by driving the winning run with his 6th hit of the night. A two-run single with one out in the 18th gives the Brewers and 4 - 3 win over the Mets. Braun outhits all of his teammates, given Milwaukee only tallies 11 safeties as a team; in the winning rally, the Mets' Chris Flexen walks the bases loaded before facing Braun.

National Pastime.com: The second inning Chase Field matchup of Mets first baseman Julio Franco against Diamondback fireballer Randy Johnson marks the oldest hitter-pitcher confrontation in big league history. With a mere 92+ years of age between them, the nearly 49 year-old goes deep off the southpaw, who is four months shy of 44, to extend his record as the oldest player to homer, and with his ninth-inning swipe of second, he continues to be the oldest to steal a base.

Hey Tom

What about using Gsellman and Familia in a dual type starting fifth pitcher role instead?

The only other pitchers I could think of were Sein-Foley or Szapucki maybe after four AAA starts.

Really

So. It's just the starting is undermanned right now due to injury. The Mets got hits yesterday. And that will develop quickly from this point and be fine again. Squirrel has landed. He's "on fire" now at the plate, like is almost always. Jeff is one of the very best natural athletes on this team.

I never doubted Jeff, JD, Brandon, Mike, or Francisco. I don't care how cloudy it gets for these five because they always come through, and I believe in them. They are outstanding players and I am so happy having them here.

Look for Francisco and Michael to breakout like really soon! You'll see!
