Gus Livaditis Mets360: Jacob deGrom’s improvement and where it came from. Gus does a great job explaining how “His training regimen mirrors Nolan Ryan’s, and we have heard Ryan say many times that a pitcher needs to pitch more often in order to have his best arm strength possible. In fact, deGrom’s leg drive has developed over the years to be more like Ryan’s and Tom Seaver’s. Every throw deGrom makes has a purpose and his release point is always exact, even when long tossing. This has allowed him to maintain the mechanical efficiency he has developed.” (Subscription required).

Some baseball night. Phillies find out that their gosh-awful bullpen of 2020 still is pretty awful.

Max had an awesome start against Yanks - Brad Hand couldn't hold it - score off of in both of his 2 innings.

Dodgers, like the Cyclones, show huge leads can become scary small leads.

Lindor - great he is hitting, but THAT was probably one of his worst offensive games.

Look at Familia giving up 3 hits in 1.2 IP and you don't realize the 3 hits were dinkers, and the first one Lindor misplayed into a hit.

Lindor hitting? McNeil hitting? Rats and Raccoons? Nimmo and JD Davis soon to return? The Mets are about to take it into overdrive.

Again not determinable from the box score - Pillar made two catches that were terrific - I doubt Nimmo makes either.

Pete frustrated on flies in the air - chill out, big fella - flies are better than Ks, as soon those flies will be becoming souvenirs.

Minors - AA, AAA look bad - St Lucie and Brooklyn look terrific. All the Young Dudes.

Yamamoto is a nice guy, but after last night, may be showing he is the kind of guy you don't want to have to call up.

Tom - Megill is the MVP of AA/AAA so far. He needs to head to 'Cuse sooner than later. He should get the Binghamton home opener Tuesday.

A few things:

* I loved Trevor May's comments on facing adversity. He's smart and well-spoken and exudes confidence. Not often a reliever can be a leader in the clubhouse, but he's got that extra swagger. I'm impressed.

* When Nimmo comes back, I hope we see Dom Smith in a reduced role. Guy needs a new sleep apnea machine. He's absolutely listless. On Smith, I didn't believe, I didn't believe, I still didn't believe . . . thought he had been hitting in some luck . . . but finally through 2020 I became a believer. Now I don't know anymore. But that glove in LF is not good. He can sit some and use his bat to make a case for more playing time.

* The stats on the relievers are crazy. Familia 0.93, Loup 1.04, May 1.59, Castro 1.33 -- and Tommy Hunter, 0.00. What I love about Hunter is that he's done it all before. Isn't afraid, throws the ball up there, usually does okay. But just fearless. I'll tell you, this is a very tough bullpen to make right now. Barnes has gotten back to looking like the pitcher from Spring Training. And Gsellman is doing his usual thing: looking tremendous and then, the next outing, giving up a run. Then looking tremendous again. It's crowded with talent right now -- with Lugo coming soon. I wonder if we'll have to trade one of these guys. Lucchesi sure looks like a reliever to me, and kind of fringy.

* I hate (hate, hate) the pitch framing stat. Lot of noise in that signal. But I'm not loving the way McCann receives the ball. He jabs, stabs at it. Granted, catching Familia is very, very tough. But we used to compliment a great defensive catcher by calling him "quiet." A quiet catcher. Bob Boone. McCann is a little loud back there. Not terrible, just not great. Be glad to see Nido back there today (I assume). You can tell that Jake loves throwing to him.

* Part 2 of the above comment: The best thing about automatic home plate umpires -- done by robots -- is that it will totally eliminate that stupid, stupid "pitch framing" statistic. It won't matter how the ball is received in terms of the umpire's call. But it will matter, as it always has, to the pitcher. The stat folks can't quantify that reality, so they hate it, but that's the game. It's another reason why Nido is such a solid backup catcher. He receives the ball well.

* Pete is getting under balls he should be hitting out of the park, which is why he's frustrated. I'd like to see him chill it out a bit. And a day off wouldn't be the worst thing in the world (once Nimmo gets back). He's playing well -- and fields like a bull in a china shop.

* If Lindor and McNeil hit the way they should, everything will be okay with the offense.

* Conforto's catch was also very impressive.

* After the Lindor-McNeil scuffle, I texted my pal that I wonder if Sandy will flip him at some point (off-season). He replied that it was the second time he heard that. So I was interested when Jeff commented last night -- twice! -- that he hopes to play with Lindor for a long, long time. He knows that it's his job to get along with Lindor, to get approval from Lindor, or he'll be gone. Jeff doesn't want to leave NY.

I agree completely on Dom Smith. He needs to sit when Nimmo comes back at least until Pillar cools off.

The McNeil-Lindor issue could be solved by just moving both back a few steps to their normal positions and stop with the over-shifts. Both have range and Lindor will play better if he's not as concerned with colliding with McNeil on grounders up the middile.

Some great reading stuff this morning. First of all, thank you John for the shout out.

I really wanted Simien this past winter but knew there wasn’t a fit.

Tom, the system really is bottom heavy but I do think Magill can help in Syracuse, problem is Binghamton can’t afford to let him go.

Jimmy, I told you weeks ago that Nimmo should be the #3 hitter, but you said he walks too much to drop down. But, he also is their best hitter.
There’s a lot of very good points in your comment but I can’t help but feel like you about Smith, except, I’m not bailing. I think he had his “Alonso offseason” where he did commercials and the civil rights stuff and his mind wasn’t on his game. He needs a refocus, but he isn’t looking badly at the plate, just not what we’ve known. I still would like to see Lugo starting games.

More Jimmy, Lindor has this habit of not squeezing the glove closed and it almost cost him a second time the same inning for Familia. McNeil has nothing to worry about, plenty of teams will want him and he will star for them. McCann’s leadership and his on field swagger I haven’t seen in a catcher since LoDuca in the mid to late 2000’s. That catch he made two nights ago running hard towards that brick wall with bats at his feet from the on deck hitters can’t be downplayed with the bases loaded and three runs down already. That was a great play. And, he has a cannon.

Bob, does a rotation that includes Alonso work for you?

Gus and Tom - Megill would make more sense in Syracuse if Garrison Bryant was in Binghampton and not St, Lucie. I think we will see a lot of shaking out throughout the system as the weeks progress. Trey Cobb already called up to Syracuse and Yoel Romero up to Binghamton - let the cream rise.

Bob:

I suspect that the Lindor-McNeil friction runs deeper than the shifts. My guess is that Lindor likes to be the coach on the field, and might be a taskmaster, pain in the ass. Jeff needs to defer, defer, defer -- and he's a hot head himself. The shifting does create confusion. They really should never be positioned where they can get in each other's way.

Gus:

Fortunately, I don't think there's anyone else on the planet who thinks Nimmo should bat 3rd. He's a career .262 hitter, 40 HRs in 1,134 ABS. His overwhelming strength is getting on base, a classic tablesetter. Not even classic -- beyond that. In 3 out of the past 4 seasons, he got on base above .400 clip. That's a result of his somewhat-passive, "patient" approach. He takes close pitches, works deep counts, walks a lot, strikes out a lot. If you bat him 3rd, you'd need him to change as a hitter: look to be more aggressive in RBI situations, swing earlier, drive in runs. So you'd be, in effect, taking him away from his strength -- the best leadoff man in baseball not named Acuna -- and asking him to change his style. Why in the world would you do that?

To me, if all pistons are firing, I'd be happy with Nimmo, Lindor, McNeil, Alonso, Conforto, Davis, Smith, McCann. But over the course of the season, it's going to ebb and flow. But always and forever, Nimmo is best at leadoff position. He gets on base; doesn't make outs. Don't overthink it.
