St. Lucie - Newton Comes Up Clutch, Mets Clip Tortugas 5-4 in 10

St. Lucie improves to 7-3, wins second straight in extra innings

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (May 14, 2021) – Shervyen Newton delivered in the clutch to lift the St. Lucie Mets to a 5-4 win in 10 innings over the Daytona Tortugas on Friday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

Newton worked a bases loaded walk in the eighth inning to force in the tying run. Then in the 10th, Newton ripped a two-out, two-run single to break the tie and put the Mets ahead 5-3.

Reliever Colby Morris struck out Alex McGarry looking to end the game, stranding the tying run at second base.

Daytona took the lead three different times in regulation, only to watch the Mets tie the game each time in the next half inning. The Mets did not take their first lead until Newton’s two-run single in the 10th.

Mets starter Justin Lasko turned in the longest outing of the year by a Mets pitcher. He logged six impressive innings, allowing just two runs on five hits. He walked one and struck out four. Lasko retired the last seven batters he faced.

Hunter Parsons followed Lasko with three strong innings out of the bullpen. He gave up one run and struck out six to get the win.

The save for Morris in the 10th was his first with the Mets organization.

At the plate the Mets worked 11 walks and were hit by a pitch three times. They also struck out 17 times.

Jose Colina yanked a RBI double in the second inning to tie the game 1-1.

Zach Ashford tied the game 2-2 in the fifth inning when he walked with the bases loaded.

Daniel Vellojin put Daytona ahead 3-2 in the seventh with a two-out double. The Mets and Newton answered right back with another bases loaded walk in the eighth.

Newton went 2 for 5 with three RBI and a run scored. Warren Saunders scored three times.

The Mets (7-3) and Tortugas (5-5) meet for the fifth time in their series on Saturday. First pitch at Jackie Robinson Ballpark is 7:05 p.m.

Good for Sherveyn Newton. Now, it is all about increasing the contact rate for him.
