At Shea Stadium, the Mets beat the Dodgers, 5-2, making Tug McGraw (2-2) the first Mets pitcher to defeat Sandy Koufax (21-7). Previously, New York had lost 13 consecutive times to the future Hall of Fame southpaw.
1968
After starting his career 0-5, Jim McAndrew gets his first major league victory when he goes the distance at Busch Stadium, blanking St. Louis on five hits, 1-0. In his first four major league starts, the Mets failed to score a run, resulting in two 2-0 and two 1-0 defeats for the 24 year-old rookie right-hander.

1993
The Mets announce that Vince Coleman will remain on paid administrative leave until the end of the season, effectively ending his playing career with the team. Co-owner Fred Wilpon's unequivocal decision that the controversial outfielder, who signed a four-year $11.95 million contract before the 1991 season, will not ever put on a Mets uniform again is the result of Coleman admitting to tossing a M-100 firecracker from a Jeep departing from a Dodger Stadium parking lot last month, injuring three people.
1996
The Mets replaced Dallas Green as their manager with Bobby Valentine, a former coach who left the organization to manage in Texas. During his stormy seven-year tenure in New York, Bobby 'V' will compile a 536-467 (.534) record and will lead the team to the NL pennant in 2000.

2008
Driving in Damion Easley with a fourth-inning groundout at Citizens Bank Park, Mets infielder David Wright becomes the first player in franchise history to have four 100-RBIs seasons. The 25 year-old has reached the plateau every year since becoming the team's regular third baseman.

Vientos and Cortes had good nights.

Taijuan Walker got hurt swinging early in the season. Hitting lefty is being inventive and injury avoidant. He can hit. .200 coming into this season.

Mets hitters suck. That said, if you shipped them all to a different home park like Houston, they have scored 80-100 more runs. Something about playing a full season in Citifield that neuters hitters. Alonso and McNeil didn't know that yet in 2019. Conforto? Smith? Lindor? It catches up to all of them. Neutered.

You can play or manage a game to win, to succeed. Or, you can play to not lose, to not fail.

Is there a difference? There sure is.

When you play to win/succeed, you give yourself a chance to do just that.

When you play to not lose/fail, you will almost certainly fail.

Rojas played to not fail last night. Maybe, the players are doing the same.

The message needs to change for there to ever be success for the Mets.

Great point Bob. I like Luis - I think he does a good job keeping thevteam together and motivated. However - as you say so well - he does not play to win. He has never gone fir the juggler in key situations. Be it not pinch hitting for Stroman on Sunday or leaving in Walker yestetday. He was like that last year as well. David Jauss as bench coach thisvyear hasn't helped.

John, have to disagree. Rojas has not kept them motivated, and as for together, that may be from his laissez-faire approach. Rojas is a good guy that got the job because there wasn’t anyone else available at the time; not on his merits. They did the right thing keeping him and leaving everything in place and gave him the pieces, but he has been overwhelmed in dealing with the speed and the style of MLB play.

As for Jauss, he was his dad’s bench coach and so there was a family comfort there. After last year’s debacle with Mullens being forced on him, Rojas got to pick his own and he wanted someone he knew.

What I would do if I were Rojas? Start playing the productive guys and benching the ones that aren’t. Alonso is not and never was a #2 hitter. Put him at 5 or 6 where he belongs. Put Baez at 5. Put McNeil or Villar at the top. Put Lindor second. Put Nimmo #3. He’s your best hitter! Let him set up the guys behind him! I said it in April and May and James mocked me. But, I would. Then Davis. Stop being stubborn!

Texas Gus, you mean your upset that the Mets would need 55 more games just to score as many as the Astros have already? Enough even to reorganize the lineup?

Your ideas most likely would HELP. Try it.

And yes, I agree with Bob W...

Loup may have been great all year - but Walker stays in there. I am not second guessing him after 74 pitches. If he was at 98 pitches, different story. PLAY THE GAME THE WAY IT WAS MEANT TO BE PLAYED. PLAY TO WIN!
