I’ll tell you the four guys not in the recently updated Mets Top 30 who should be.
IF Jose Peroza, 6 months younger than top 3 prospect Brett Baty, has played 81 games through Sunday, the equivalent of half of a 162 game season this year. So let’s double his 2021 numbers for a full season picture:
His 17 doubles, 10 HRs and 54 RBIs in 81 games? Over 162 games, that would be 34 doubles, 20 HRs, 108 RBIs, 94 walks, .269, .391 OBP. And a reasonable rate of just over a K per game.
And he is not in the Top 30 because…..(I’m waiting, you can answer me at any time. Please…I’m all ears).

Jake Mangum hits .450 in his first 18 August games in AA (plus 2 for 2 in a suspended game on Sunday not yet added to his stats as I write this), plays a fine OF, has good speed, and modest pop. Top 30? I looked...nope, he's not there.

A guy who in his last 5 starts in AA and AAA has gone 30 innings, fanned 48, and allowed 1 run on 10 hits?
Clearly not Top 30 material, you say? Then…who is?

Cole Gordon, a 2019 draftee pitching the entire season all the way up in AA, after just 30 rookie ball innings in 2019? Last 4 starts, 24 IP, 5 hits, no runs, fanned 32. Which is like throwing 3 straight 2 hit complete game shutouts averaging 12 Ks.
Top 30? No way, Jose.
I mean, how could a guy doing that possibly be considered Top 30 material?

Not looking to bash other Top 30 guys by name, but two unnamed (by me here) Mets' listed top 30 guys have alarming K levels.
One unnamed-by-me guy in the most recent Top 30 (27th), has played in Low A in both 2019 and 2021. In 498 at bats, he has hit .198 there, with 197 Ks in 689 plate appearances. 2 Ks per game this year. He’s in the Mets’ Top 30, but the other 2 hitters above are not?
SMH. LOL.
Another unnamed guy in the Top 30 (15th) (who I think belongs in the Top 30, but lower down, because of what I am about to add here) has 109 Ks in 81 games in 2021. In 2019, he had 108 Ks in 62 games. That's 217 Ks in 143 games. Recently promoted to High A, he has an excessive 28 Ks in 15 games there.
Each of the two reminds me stats-wise of once-ranked former Mets prospect Champ Stuart (633 Ks in 491 games), who was similarly speedy, although not seemingly quite as good with the bat as at least one of the above two.
Once Stuart got to AA, he hit .200 there over portions of 3 seasons, with 242 Ks in 614 ABs. He never got to AAA.
SMH.
Lastly, Javy Baez strikes out a whole lot these days - 146 times in 102 games this year. In the minors, by comparison, he (only) fanned slightly more than once a game. Lots of major leaguers fan more than they did in the minors, some a lot more. Far better pitching might have something to do with that.
Elite pitching that Mets’ prospects will someday have to face, if and once promoted to the Show.

Actually, my Productive Top 30 List will post here tomorrow. I think I will update it every few weeks. Give the Productive Dudes their due.
This says one of two things . .
(1) the farm is deeper than it is given credit for.

(2) the system is flawed

Great post Tom. Also Peroza is a better 3rd defender than others on the prospect list (see yesterday's Breakfast Links) and Mangum is a good defender - see today's Breakfast Links.
Someone once compared Magnun to Nimmo. Unlike Nimmo, Mangum can steal and play defense. He will be in Syracuse next year.
John, Peroza has his work cut out for him to push past the "name" guy. We'll see by this time next year where these guys stand.
Nimmo getting expensive. Mangum won't be. But Nimmo walks a lot more.
Remember 1969, much of the minors is weak on talent and occupied by veterans who will most likely be lucky to get brief call ups.
That said, stocked in high tier hitting - I think most teams would like our top 5 hitters down under.
Pitching remains kind of thin, given the propensity of injuries. Losing Rocker after losing Allan was a big blow.
But lets not start their clocks to find out in this lost year right...just crazy. Also can you look any worse than Mr. Superstar swinging the bat but please don't send him for a rehab assignment which leads me to the question: Who's running this ship (not to be confused with another word that sounds like ship) I'm old and must admit I don't know what SMH stands for?
