RHP Hurston Waldrep

Hurston Waldrep broke out for Southern Miss last year after rarely seeing action as a reliever in 2021. He’s a big strikeout guy that doesn’t walk opponents often and can eat innings.

His fastball is hittable, but his off-speed stuff generates the swing and miss fairly often. He should be a lock for the No. 2 spot behind Sproat and provide some stability to the rotation.

RHP Hurston Waldrep

Waldrep enters his first season as a Gator after transferring in from Southern Miss during the offseason. Highly regarded as one of the top arms in the nation, Waldrep was named a 2022 Third Team All-American by D1Baseball after churning out 90 frames of 3.20 ERA ball with 140 strikeouts – translating to 14.0 strikeouts per nine innings. The Thomasville, Ga. native was equally brilliant in limited action as a freshman in 2021, working to a 3.35 ERA and .217 batting average against with 16 strikeouts in 16 1/3 innings of work.

11. Texas Rangers

Hurston Waldrep, RHP, Florida

Waldrep, a transfer from Southern Miss, is a bulldog on the mound with an intimidating presence and the pure stuff to back it up. It’s a double-plus fastball, up to 98 with big ride and significant bat-missing qualities. He offers a mid-80s slider with two-plane break and tunnel that’s given righties fits. There’s a solid average changeup in there too, though he’s yet to really unleash it with much regularity.

Waldrep shares a lot of similarities with Jack Leiter, the Rangers 2021 first rounder. The frame, the fastball, the projection and intensity; it’s all there. The Rangers are in a win-now mode, so combining Waldrep with Leiter, as well as 2022 first rounder Kumar Rocker in the very near future makes for a pretty intimidating rotation.

8. Hurston Waldrep

Right-Handed Pitcher, Florida

Waldep transferred out of Southern Miss to Florida for his junior year after some impressive undergrad campaigns. The fastball gets up to 97 with immense hop at the top of the zone and true bat-missing qualities. The slider is thrown firm and short with late two-plane tilt that Waldrep gets hitters to chase with regularity. He's also flashed an above average changeup, though it's inconsistent both in shape and execution.

Waldrep has a super-athletic frame with well-proportioned strength and a wicked quick arm. He's a true power pitcher with a bulldog mentality on the bump.

9. Angels: Hurston Waldrep, RHP, Southern Miss

Waldrep made a very strong transition to the Southern Miss rotation in 2022, striking out 14 batters per nine innings while walking 3.3. He’s bringing his mid-90s fastball (up to 98), a hard slider up to 90 mph, an occasional slower curve and a mid-80s changeup. He misses a ton of bats with all of his secondary stuff.

Mack -

14 K/IP ain't chopped liver.

Let's see if he can duplicate these numbers this season in the SEC for Florida.

Hurston could put a hurtin' on Mets opponents someday if the Mets pick him
