2025-2026 OFF-SEASON SPOTLIGHT: UPGRADING THE BULLPEN: TARGET #1 - BRYAN HUDSON - RP: WHITE SOX

ANGRY MIKE

The Mets primary focus for the upcoming off-season should be centered around building a new core group for their bullpen that serves as a bridge to their closer. What started out as a promising, highly reliable group for a little over a month, quickly turned into a massacre of biblical proportion. The 2025 season for the Mets bullpen best resembles the transformative state of events witnessed during the opening scene from “Saving Private Ryan”.

APRIL & MAY

JUNE TO ALL-STAR BREAK

POST-ALL-STAR BREAK TO SEPTEMBER

Carnage and casualties, are the only words you need to describe what the Mets bullpen has endured. They quickly reverted back to 2024 form and are currently among the league leaders in blown saves. 2025 has added a new wrinkle, where we’ve seen Mets pitchers regularly squandering leads of 4+ runs almost like clockwork. Championship teams simply don’t often lose games when their offense scores 5 or more runs, and our win-loss record for 1-run games does not reflect that of the 2nd highest payroll in the league. Look I could go on and on, but let’s not re-live it, we know what the problem is, let’s focus on finding solutions for 2026.

Step one will obviously result in Edwin Diaz using his opt-out close as leverage to perhaps tack on an extra couple years onto his league-leading annual salary. Outside of that he really doesn’t have much leverage considering this winter will be a HISTORIC class of relievers hitting the open market, both in terms of volume for both Tier-I and Tier-II.

If Adam Smith, “The Father of Economics” saw the state of this winter’s relievers’ market, he’d quickly label it a buyer’s market. After locking up Diaz, the Mets have a great opportunity to reinforce their bullpen with multiple high-leverage arms that should be looking to sign quickly.

That being said one of the more intriguing relievers the Mets should focus on adding this winter, isn’t a free agent, and will have to be added via the trade market.

Introducing, Bryan Hudson, RP, White Sox, formerly of the Brewers.

6’8. Throws low 90s, tops out around 94, plus curveball, plus sweeper. Delivery also has elite deception and extension which boosts the effectiveness of his pitches.

Hudson was arguably one of the most effective relievers during the 2024 season, and as far as reliever’s go, he easily qualifies as a “quadruple threat”.

> Dominant numbers versus righties.

> Dominant numbers versus lefties.

> Ability to pitch multiple innings.

> Can rack up strikeouts or induce weak contact.

Hudson’s 2025 season has been the complete opposite of his 2024 season, capped off by the Brewers banishing him to the White Sox via waivers, only after the trade deadline had expired. It’s confusing why the Brewers didn’t look to trade Hudson. His potential combined with multiple years of team control could have fetched at least a couple of quality prospects in return. What isn’t confusing is the Brewers making sure Hudson ended up with White Sox. Based on how incompetent Chris Getz has proven to be from the Luis Robert trade negotiations, the Brewers can rest easy that if Hudson is to be traded to a potential rival the process will be excruciating.

Stearns is very familiar with Hudson’s potential and has shown a vicious obsession for “buy-low” candidates, which means Hudson checks 2 very important boxes. Hudson. Hudson also offers intriguing upside as a multi-inning lockdown reliever, who can dominate against righties or lefties, checking two more important boxes. Whatever Hudson’s issues are during this season, he provides too much potential upside to completely ignore.

There will be a record number of different options for the Mets to explore in their pursuit of building a bullpen that has the potential to not be among the league leaders in blown saves for a third consecutive season.

Bryan Hudson would be an excellent start towards building a reliable bullpen for the 2026 season, but only if the Mets are able to acquire him for a reasonable price…

THAT MEANS MARK VIENTOS IS NOT ON THE TABLE MR GETZ!!

So we lose 2 of 3 to the Reds and without a miracle finish on Friday night we get swept then on Sunday as has happened far to often in my life I go 0 for 3 with my Mets, Jets and Giants and wonder why I picked them all so long ago as my teams? On top of all that I then see Drew friggin Gilbert hit .526 with a 1.655 OPS and 6 XBH in his last 7 games and we have to watch the sorriest excuse for a ballplayer in Mullins go thru the motions. David this is on you bro and I'm really pissed and I have to vent today and your my target!

I like the analysis on Hudson and he seems like a good 2026 target. I still think that the talent in the bullpen right now is good and can't provide a justification for their failures, but if they can get into this funk, then they can get out of this funk. No better time than now, guys!

There had to be an alternative to selling Gilbrrt

I don't agree Paul

To me, Dylan Ross looks like a good add

Tom will try and sell you on others

A lot of work is needed here

Mack, there had to be an alternative to selling Crow, too.

Lambert and Ross could help right now. The Kids AreAll Right

One thing this year proves, you can NEVER have too much pitching. I thought the Mets for once took that seriously this past off season, but the staff looked like it had a 300 bowler blasting them all over the alley. Flies don’t drop that fast.

I still haven’t written off Helsley in 2026. We wrote off Paul Sewald some years back, and OUCH! That was wrong.

McLean tonight. No pressure, it’s just Philly in Philly.

Being reported that Tylor Mcgill is going for an MRI and has been shut down for an evaluation.

Tom,
You are certainly right about the need for numerous pitchers.
