Pat Misch, Oliver Perez, Roster Projections, Martinez & Mejia... and Jose Reyes' Health

Pat Misch:

Since Pat is currently putting up the best stats on the Mets staff, maybe we oughta spend some time trying to figure out who he is.

Misch was a lefty starter at Western Michigan University who was drafted in the 7th round of the 2003 draft, by the San Francisco Giants.

He piched for parts of five seasons in the Giants organization, and made it to the Bigs four times, combining for an 0-7 record.

Misch will start the 2010 season as a 29-year old and turn 30 in August.

The Mets claimed Misch in 2009 when the Giants had to leave him exposed after be ing called up, and then back down to AAA. He threw the only complete game shutout on the 2009 Mets season, and finished going 3-4, 4.12, in 22 games, 7-starts.

Oliver Perez:

“He threw strikes. That was the main focus we had going in,” manager Jerry Manuel said. “We felt if he could get some level of comfort out there and throw strikes that we’d be very satisfied.” Washington got to Perez for three in the first, one in the second and one in the third. Mike Morse(notes) hit a two-run drive in the first for his second homer in two days against the Mets. “I was really happy to be on the mound and start a game,” Perez said. “I was a little nervous. I used all my pitches. My changeup was really good. My fastball wasn’t spotted, but I felt great.” - link

Roster Projections:

Opening Day is still a month away, so I'm not ready to make any serious projections yet. My goal is to spend the upcoming weeks looking at the players who are assured of going north with the Mets when camp breaks. The last week or so will be dedicated to the players fighting for the few open spaces on the roster (SP5, RP 6 and 7, one or two bench spots).

For now, here's a basic breakdown of the players on the 40-man roster, as well as the non-roster invitees, who are at Port St. Lucie right now. This is my best guess as for who is going where, as well as the players who will open the season on the disabled list. One note: A lot of the NRIs are going to be released before the season starts and will not actually end up in Buffalo. I'm not going to speculate too much on that; you can assume that any NRI who I've placed in Buffalo is almost equally likely to be released (especially if they have previous MLB experience). - link

Martinez y Mejia:

If the Mets are truly committed to player development, both Mejia and Martinez will start the season in the Minors. Moving Mejia to the bullpen is short-term thinking about a fleeting need instead of long-term thinking about a possible anchor to the Mets' rotation for years to come. Letting Martinez get regular at-bats in Buffalo to rebuild his confidence and prove he can stay healthy will only help his long-term viability.

With luck, this dynamic duo will bang the doors down at Citi Field and force the Mets to make room for them. That's what David Wright did to Ty Wigginton. That's what Mejia and Martinez should do to the rotation and outfield, respectively - link

Jose Reyes’ Health:

So this is starting to bother me just a little bit. I understand Jose Reyes isn’t Cal Ripken Jr., but the guy isn’t Nick Johnson either. He was injured last year, and I understand that. However, once the news was out that he was going back for a check on the thyroid imbalance, people started freaking out even more. The condition is treatable. I understand that I might be minimizing the situation, but it seems as if the fan base is always looking for something to get on Mets brass about. - link
