82. Richard Lucas – 3B – low-A – 22/yrs –
Lucas was a heralded 4th round draft pick in 2007, who was signed and immediately sent to the GCL Mets (.264 in 212 at bats).
A scouting report from draft day: 3/4 delivery throws fastball 88-91. has an average to below average slider and a below average changeup. projects as ML reliever....oh wait sorry that's every other guy we drafted
From: http://www.perfectgame.com/ : - Perfect Game describes Lucas as a having a solid frame and strong build...good enough infielder and has the speed and athletic ability to play the outfield....good offensive type player that will take the extra base and is aggressive first to third who shows good anticipation and instincts...played with Wolfson in the 2004 Class 5A State Championship game...shows power potential and is a very interesting young "07"...has a high school GPA of 3.25.
FSU Asst. Coach Shouppe: - "He is the best third baseman in the country in my opinion. For a big guy he has the best, softest hands you will ever see in a big kid. He has Major League hands. If it hits his glove, you are out. He won't bobble or miss many. He played shortstop in high school and could probably play there at this level if you wanted a 6'3", 215 pound shortstop. If he isn't that big, he sure looks it. He projects as an outstanding Division I third baseman."
FSU Asst. Coach Martin: - "He is a big, physical third baseman. He is the truest third baseman I have seen in three years. When you look at him take ground balls you become even more impressed. He has great hands. He is an inside/out guy that will hit a lot of doubles off our screen. The way he swings the bat, the path of his bat and his approach to hitting, is very similar to Matt Diaz. That is what really intrigued us about him. He has a bright future. It will be a battle with the pros for him as well because he made a lot of noise at the last two showcases."
2008 was an absolutely miserable year for Lucas, who batted .185 at both Savannah (119 at bats) and Kingsport (27 at bats). The rest of the season was spent either on the DL or in extended camp and I was frankly surprised he was invited back this year.
Forecast – Jan 2010: Yes. Lucas had a great 2009 season, but where is it going to get him in 2010? He’s already played in Savannah (.185 in 119 at bats in 2008) and it’s expected for Jenry Marte to repeat next year as the Sand Gnat’s third baseman. The only slot open is St. Lucie, which makes more sense for the 22-yr. old who will be in his 4th season as a Met.
http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospects/?p=8346 - Richard Lucas: New York's fourth-round selection, is poised to do his part to redeem the ’07 draft. If the name doesn't sound familiar, it's probably for lack of exposure—the 21-year-old third baseman played in just 137 games during his first three pro seasons. The Jacksonville native contended with a knee injury in 2008 and personal issues that also resulted in missed time. But coming off a cumulative .318/.414/.534 batting line in short-season ball last year, Lucas earned a promotion all the way to St. Lucie to begin the season. The righthanded batter was off to a 9-for-38 (.237) start with two homers and two doubles in the Florida State League. He garnered just 119 at-bats at the low Class A level, and even they were practically ancient history, having transpired in the opening weeks of the 2008 season

Hey Mack,
What makes Mr. Lucas a keeper in your eyes since he is only hitting in the low .200's striking out 30% of the time?
