Cutnpaste: - Hisanori Takahashi, Cost Per Win, Carl Crawford, The Right Thing... and IP Winter Leagues

Michael G. Baron
 Hisanori Takahashi:

•Potential free agent Hisanori Takahashi is open to remaining a reliever, meaning he won't necessarily seek out a situation where he has a chance to start.

•The last report we heard on Takahashi suggested that he'd prefer to remain a Met. However, Davidoff indicates the Yankees, Phillies, and Dodgers also "intrigue" the Japanese lefty

Cost Per Win:

We've been taking a look at possible relationships between how much money a team spends and the team's respective win total. Hopefully more to come later, but for the time being we thought it'd be neat to take a look at how much each team spent per win in 2010. Salaries obtained from Cot's Baseball Contracts

Team Salary Wins Cost Per Win Total Salary Rank

Florida Marlins $47,429,719 80 $592,871 28

Atlanta Braves $83,890,334 91 $921,872 17

Philadelphia Phillies $138,178,379 97 $1,424,519 4

New York Mets $126,498,096 79 $1,601,242 6

Average $93,612,308 $1,153,851 - BRM

Carl Crawford:

Considered by most to be the prize free agent of the 2011 class, Crawford is truly the complete player. He’s an excellent fielder, he hits for decent power, gets on base, and uses his blazing speed to wreak havoc on the base paths. Crawford’s versatility can really alter a lineup, as he’s a great fit for the first, second or third spot in the order. Tampa Bay will no longer be able to afford him, but after the numbers he put up in the first half of his career, there’s sure to be an intense bidding war for his services.

PREDICTED DESTINATION: Boston Red Sox - DOD

The Right Thing:

So the Mets are left with little recourse but to mend fences and move on, trying not to saddle the new GM with a roster full of unfixable problems. While cutting Perez might make sense and certainly would win popularity points, why not let him linger on the roster over the winter with the hope – long shot I know – something clicks in winter ball?

You want Beltran gone and Angel Pagan in center field? Sure, why not? But Beltran is due $18 million this season with a full no-trade clause. So what would it take to deal him after knee surgery and a recurrence of pain that cost him the final week of the season? Is it worth eating half the contract to move him when he figures to play hard for a new contract – somewhere else – this season?  -  Popper
