Moneyball:
For the past five years, though, we've taken considerable crap from fellow Mets fans, concerned with the harmful spread of "Moneyball" ideas in their favorite sport. We (usually) bit our tongues as people with no scouting expertise shielded their bunk opinions under a non-existent "stats vs. scouting" conflict. The same fans, who most loudly bemoaned the failures of Omar Minaya, denounced our specific criticisms without the slightest hint of irony. Yet, the Mets have now hired the man Moneyball is actually about. Nobody protests. Confronted with the reality of the book, the physical manifestation of its ideas, Mets fans can only respect his undeniable track record of success. Most probably don't even realize that this man, an industry legend, a Marine, a baby boomer, a universally-hailed hire, created the progressive culture they are so quick to deride

Robbie Shields |
10-27-10 from: - scoutingthesally. ... en-v-2010 - Robbie Shields, New York Mets - After starting slowly, Robbie Shields put the injuries which stole about a year of his development time behind him and showed he was ready for a promotion to Port St. Lucie. At 22, the former 3rd round pick was old for the “Sally” making it difficult to gauge the legitimacy of his .290/.331/.457 line. One thing is for certain though, a move off of shortstop will happen at some point leaving Shields an offense-minded second base prospect who will have to prove his pop at every level.
Sandy-Fest:
After thinking about all these things, Alderson seems perfect for where the Mets are right now. Frankly, they have become a mess. They have become the butts of jokes from Letterman to their own fans. Alderson gives the team proven leadership and a winning track record. Plus he brings the Mets enough presence to keep Wilpon away from the pot. All that's left is to make the official announcement. That won't come until Friday during the World Series off day (the Mets don't want to pull an A-Rod). This is good news, Mets' fans.

Now he wants to follow Big Mac into the coaching profession some day.Bonds spoke just outside the San Francisco Giants' clubhouse before Game 1 of the World Series against the Texas Rangers on Wednesday night. "I love being home. I love being here," he said. When asked if he'd like to do more than just cheer on his former team in the future, Bonds said he would be interested in becoming a hitting coach in the future.

Wally:
One down, one to go. Now that Sandy Alderson has been selected as the Mets’ general manager, next up on the agenda is finding a manager, and the early indications are that it is not likely to be Wally Backman. Backman, a fan favorite, impressed chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon in his first season at Class A Brooklyn, which figured to be almost like a probationary period after his troubled past. But a person familiar with the situation indicated that Alderson did not approve of Backman when asked about him during his interview. The new GM provided a list of potential managers, and was quizzed on others, but Alderson’s philosophy suggests less volatile, lower-profile candidates. — Newsday
