Considering how much people say Kirk Gibson’s 1988 Game 1 World Series homer was so much like the movie “The Natural,” it’s natural to assume that his bat, helmet and uniform would have been donated to the Baseball Hall of Fame at some point.
Gibson, apparently, kept the items. And now he’s ready to sell.
A news conference Tuesday at the Sports Museum of L.A. will display the items and announce an auction for them taking place Oct. 27-Nov. 13. - BTF
All indications are that the Reds aren't likely to pick up shortstop Orlando Cabrera's $4 million mutual option. That doesn't necessarily mean Cabrera's stay in Cincinnati is ending after only one year.
Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said he was interested in retaining the 35-year-old at a lower price.
"We're not sure. We'll probably know something later this week," Jocketty said Monday from the team's complex at Goodyear, Ariz.

From 2009: Dana Brown has been hired as a special assistant to new Toronto Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos.
The 42-year-old Brown spent the past eight seasons as the director of scouting for the Washington Nationals and Montreal Expos. It was with Montreal that Brown first met Anthopoulos, who replaced J.P. Ricciardi in Toronto on Oct. 3.
Drafted by Philadelphia in 1989, Brown spent three seasons in the minor leagues before becoming a coach in 1992. He spent eight seasons as a scout with Pittsburgh before joining Montreal. - NESN

Wedge, 42, managed Cleveland for seven seasons, from 2003-09, compiling a 561-573 record. However, he was 428-382 from 2004-08. The Indians advanced to the ALCS in 2007, losing to the Red Sox in seven games, and Wedge was voted AL Manager of the Year.
"I think this is a terrific opportunity and I am excited to be a part of it," Wedge said. "Seattle is a great city for me and my family. With the fan support, the ballpark, the ownership and management, the Mariners are in a great position to be very successful."
First on Wedge's agenda, though, will be assembling a coaching staff. It was unknown whether Brown or any of the coaches who finished the season on the Mariners' staff would be invited back for the 2011 season. -

The raw power is real, but so are the whiffs. The swing isn’t terrible, but scouts are concerned about the contact rates, and rightfully so.
