Draft Report: - Area Code Games, Kurt Heyer, Dillon Howard, Scott McGough, Austin Wood, Grayson Garvin, Peter O'Brien

The Mack Draft Report – 10-22-10:



Early reports from the Area Code games down in Jupiter is that RHP John Magliozzi topped off at 94 yesterday… in addition, Cuban refugee Jose Fernandez sat at 94 and threw an 81 change-up…

Brian Foley and the gang over at CBB  ranked sophomore RHP Kurt Heyer as the 84th top player in the country. Remember now, this isn’t the top 100 people available in this year’s draft. No, trust me, there will be some big underclassman names in this ranking.



Big stats and accolades here… 2010 College freshman team member… 7-4, 3.26, 17-G, 102-IP, 109-K, 29-BB… Yahoo all-freshman team… 6-2, 196…



My 2012 rankings are a little raw at this point, but I have him as the 10th top RHP for the 2012 draft, behind Lance McCullers, Lucas Giolito, Courtney Hawkins, Dylan Floro, Michael Wacha, Matt Price, Brady Rodgers, Cory Roberts, and Hudson Randall…


But, what do I know? :)

There has been some additional movement in the mock draft rankings. Some of the highs and lows are:

RHP – Dillon Howard – Why does www.draftsite.com hate Dillon Howard? Howard has been picked in every single mock draft that has come out so far this mock season, and then Draft Site comes along on October 1st, ranks the top 213 players, and leaves Dillon off the list. 213 players? Seiler and MLB Prospect have him as 14th. Hickey and 5 Tool rank him 21st. Sully has him 15th and PG puts him down as 20th. 213th?



RHP – Scott McGough – McGough was basically unspoken about in June through August; however, look at this progression: 10-1 Draft Site: 131st, 10-20 PG: 51st, 10-20 Toss It: 23rd. McGough came out of high school with a fastball that topped out at around 88, but it’s now comfortably sitting at 92. Add that to a plus pls 11-6 curve and he’s one to watch.



RHP – Austin Wood - Wood is now the 19th ranked right handed pitcher in my composite mock draft, based solely on the fact that an old scout reported that his fastball is now “sitting” at 95, and runs up to 98. Wood went unsigned in 2010 after transferring to St. Petersburg Junior College from FSU and is considered a project, but 98 is 98.



LHP – Grayson Garvin – Garvin is another pitcher that started off this mock season not being named by anyone. Since then he’s had him name named three out of the last five mocks, including 46th for 5 Tool, and 57th for PG. All this hoopla comes from being named the BFC Whitehouse Top Pitcher award in the Cape Cod League, where he went a perfect 5-0, with a league-leading 0.74 ERA. As of today, I have him as the 15th top LHP and a third rounder at best.



C – Peter O’Brien – O’Brien also started slow but is getting his fair share of mentions in October mock drafts. Draft site has him at 153rd, followed by 5 Tool at 30th and PG at 91st. His bump up could be due to an excellent showing in the 2010 Team USA games. For now, I still have him as the 15th overall catching prospect, which translates in the 4th to 5th round.
