The Mack Draft Report – 10-20-10:
The College Baseball Blog continues it’s annual ranking of the top 100 college players in the next draft, and featured Florida International infielder Garrett Wittels as the 87th ranked player. Wittels is more known recently as the keeper of a 56-game hitting streak, the longest in the country and the second longest in Division I baseball history behind Robin Ventura, who hit safely in 58 games in 1987 at Oklahoma State. I’m sure they’ll be plenty of press on this kid during his first three games this season for FIU.

The team “Chet Lemon’s Juice” beat “Bullets Baseball”, 1-0, in the First Annual George M. Steinbrenner Classic, held October 17th, hosted by the New York Yankees. Pitchers T.J. Renda, Devin Smith, and 2012 prospect Trey Oest combined for the 10-inning shutout. This was an all-pitcher game with basically no big hitter. In fact, the winning run came in on a sacrifice fly. Bullets starter, Chase Sparkman, tossed seven shutout innings.

Over 30 MLB scouts attended the University of Kentucky intrasquad scrimmage this past Tuesday at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
Two pitches both tossed two scorless innings in relief. Junior RHP Branden Kapteyn struck out three in his two innings and was awarded the win. Fellow junior Nick Kennedy allowed only one hit, striking out two in his outing.
Sophomore catcher Luke Maile was the hitting star with a solo home run. This the same Maile that was named the 2009 Kentucky High School Mr. Baseball. He was drafted in the 43rd round of the 2009 draft by the Boston Red Sox, but decided to go to Kentucky instead.
