Reyes, Boras, and the Inevitable Conclusion

Reports have surfaces that Jose Reyes and agent Scott Boras might be joining forces to negotiate the future of the Mets shortstop. The first reports said Boras had approached Reyes. Now I hear that Reyes is negotiating with Boras. Jose’s current agent is the godfather of his children. So much for loyalty.

Let’s not spend too much time on this. Reyes would hire Boras for one reason and it ain’t to give the Mets a hometown discount. I don’t blame him. Let’s assume he retires at 35. He still will spend approximately 45 more years on earth not playing baseball. He has once chance for a Carl Crawford contract and he’d be foolish to pass on this opportunity.

That being said, the Mets have now been forewarned that Reyes will become a free agent. They can do two things. One, offer Jose as much as they can afford and eventually wind up with two supplemental draft picks in a mildly talented draft. Or, two, sell him now at his current value to a team making a pennant run.

The rest of the league has also been forewarned that, no matter how much you want him this year, Jose (through Boras) will entertain offers in the off-season. Nothing is etched in stone here.

Conservatively, the Mets can get two players right now for Jose. Maybe three, but definitely two. There’s no need for an infielder. Ike Davis, Ruben Tejada, Justin Turner, Daniel Murphy, Reese Havens, and David Wright represent the future Mets infield.

The Mets need an outfielder with pop, a full time catcher, and another starter, preferably a lefty.

You can draft two of these positional players next June and pray they develop, or trade for two guys that have already proved they can develop.

Your choice.

I've seen power hitters who can carry a team for weeks and seemingly beat opponents single handedly. However, to watch a leadoff hitter do it is remarkable. That being said, Ruben Tejada and a GOOD, powerful outfield prospect that will be a conerstone for years to come via a trade of Reyes would be fine by me. I do not want draft picks. They need to offer him 100 mill, over five years now. If he says no, trade him while he has maximum value and isnt in a slump. Remember, he's playing at a level that we have seen glimpses of, but he never sustained it. In right years, he's been hurt for 3 of them and it's usually a leg problem. He doesn't seem to be able to play hurt, especially because he relies on his legs and is a shortstop. I love him and will be heartbroken watching highlights of him tripling for another team. However, trade'em to an american league team or at least to the west coast and bring back a, no doubter. Put that money back into the team next year with a good pitcher and into the draft. Possibly by not signing him, we can make sure we sign Nimmo, Fulmer, Robbins, and thee other high schoolers they drafted that they think have high ceilings. Remember, boston got better after trading Manny. They got better after trading Nomar. Texas got better after trading Texiera and A Rod. This isnt the end of the world. Charley T

One has to wonder how much Fred Wilpon's idiotic comments a few weeks ago are playing into his decision? I realize Boras approached Reyes well before the story came out, but you gotta believe that it has to be some motivation for potentially hiring Boras. I would just to say "Thank You" to Fred Wilpon for his huge contribution to the Mets losing Jose Reyes, either via trade (you won't get anything for a Boras client) or via Free Agency. Thanks a lot Fred!

100mil will not be accepted by Boras, so you might as well offer it and get over it... his trade value will only diminish as the season goes on... no one can play at this level forever
