6-16-11: - Sickles - Also slumping in June is New York Mets outfield prospect Cory Vaughn, hitting .163/.241/.245 with four walks and 11 strikeouts in 49 at-bats for Low-A Savannah. He'd been hot early, hitting .303/.413/.434 in April and .356/.496/.510 in May, so his overall season line of .297/.419/.428 is still solid despite the slump. His strikeout rate is a touch higher than ideal with 55 whiffs in 229 at-bats, but he's also drawn 35 walks. The son of former major league outfielder Greg Vaughn, Cory has excellent tools but his erratic college performance at San Diego State dropped him to the fourth round in the 2010 draft. He has an especially sharp platoon split (1.066 OPS against lefties, .777 against right-handers), and has also been much more effective on the road (.946) than at home (.756). Even at this point of the season, the sample sizes with these splits aren't necessarily meaningful. Scouts were pleased with the improvements he made to his swing after signing last year, and while his isolated power is down in the Sally League, but I remain pretty optimistic about his chances.
Robert Lake:
The New York Mets signed RHP Robert Lake out of Winthrop as a non-drafted free agent (NDFA). – “Winthrop right-handed pitcher Robert Lake has signed a free agent contract with the National League's New York Mets. He went 4-4 with a 4.84 ERA this season and tossed the team's only complete game, which came in a 4-1 victory over the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs on May 20. It was the fourth career complete game for Lake. He finished second on the team with 89.1 innings pitched and walked just 19 batters in 16 total appearances. Lake pitched 8.0 innings or more four times this season, and won all four starts against the Runnin' Bulldogs, Liberty Flames, UNC Asheville Bulldogs and Mercer Bears. He struck out a season-high seven batters against the Charleston Southern Buccaneers on Apr. 23, and did not allow a walk in six of his appearances. The New York Mets signed C Tyler Carpenter (NDFA—Texas-San Antonio). He’s a 5-10 senior.
Jon Niese:
First, the rate stats. In the ten 'good' starts, Niese had 49 strikeouts in 66 1/3 innings for a 6.64 K/9. That's lower than his overall rate (7.03) and his rate in the three bad starts (15 in 16 1/3 innings for a 8.27 K/9). His walk rate was 2.85 K/9 in the good games, 3.31 in the bad games. In his good starts, Niese got 6.7% swinging strikes. That's compared to 6.9% overall according to FanGraphs. It doesn't look like the swinging strike is at the heart of his Hyde personality. His 'good' ground-ball-to-fly-ball ratio was 2.06. His 'bad' one was two on the nose. Perhaps his GB/FB ratio is also not the problem here. There's just not much of a difference in terms of the results of those at-bats. He's shown better control in his good games, but that's a little bit like saying that he's been better in his good games - AA
Fernando Martinez:
Fernando Martinez had to leave Triple-A Buffalo's game in the bottom of the fourth inning Thursday with right knee soreness. Here we go again. F-Mart has had an arthritic right knee ever since undergoing surgery on it back in 2009, and it's expected to be something the 22-year-old will have to battle for the rest of his career. He also spent time on the minor league DL earlier this season with a hamstring issue. It's not clear at this time how long he might be sidelined. - roto
