LAST GAME: The B-Mets set a season-high in runs and matched a season-high with 17 hits in a 13-2 win over the Portland Sea Dogs at NYSEG Stadium last night. B-Mets starter Robert Car-son allowed one earned run over six innings to pick up his first win since June 17. Binghamton’s offense exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a tie game. Brahiam Maldonado started the rally by ripping his 19th home run of the season off starter Brock Huntzinger. The B-Mets collected five more runs on four more hits in the inning, including four tallies against reliever Caleb Clay. The home team extended their lead with a five-run output in the eighth against Clay and southpaw Cesar Cabral. Brad Holt and Erik Turgeon combined to post three scoreless innings of relief.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Collin McHugh makes his tenth start with the B-Mets and second against the Portland Sea Dogs. McHugh is on a two-game winning streak and the B-Mets have won in each of his last three starts. He held the Reading Phillies to one run on four hits over five innings in a win in his last start on July 21. McHugh lost to the Sea Dogs on July 5th at NYSEG Stadium.
RHP Chris Balcom-Miller will make his 11th start with Portland this season and second against Binghamton. The California native picked up the win with six shutout innings of work against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on July 21. Balcom-Miller allowed seven runs on nine hits in a loss to the B-Mets on July 4. He started the season with the Salem Red Sox (BOS: High-A) and went 2-1 with a 2.34 ERA in seven starts in the Carolina League before being promoted in late May. A 6th round pick by the Rockies in 2009, he was traded to the Red Sox for Manny Declarmen in August 2010.
THE STREAK CONTINUES: Eric Campbell’s single to right field in the seventh inning last night extended his hitting streak to ten games, the longest for any B-Met in 2011. In 19 games in the month of July, Campbell is hitting .379 (22-58) with five dou-bles, seven RBI, and only six strike outs. He has raised his batting by 35 points over that span.
TEMPERATURE’S RISING: The B-Mets offense has kicked into a higher gear in the month of July. In 25 games, Binghamton is hitting .292 as a team, third best in the league behind Reading (.300) and Bowie (.298). They have also slugged 30 home runs, their highest total for any month this season.
JUST A LITTLE EXTRA: Binghamton matched a season-high with eight extra-base hits last night against the Sea Dogs. They last did that against the Reading Phillies on July 21.
