LAST GAME: The Portland Sea Dogs scored two runs in the first two innings and added two more in the last two innings to de-feat the Binghamton Mets 4-2 last night at NYSEG Stadium. B-Mets starter Collin McHugh settled down after two bumpy in-nings and made it through six, retiring eleven of the final twelve he faced. Binghamton cut the deficit in half on Brahiam Maldonado’s double in the third and tied it on Jordany Valdespin’s RBI single in the seventh. Jack Egbert relieved McHugh and tossed a perfect seventh before giving Portland the lead for good in the eighth. Ryan Khoury singled with two outs, advanced to second on a balk, and scored on Alex Has-son’s single up the middle. Tim Federowicz added insurance with a home run in the ninth. Blake Maxwell recorded four outs for his tenth save.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Tobi Stoner makes his twelfth start of the season and second against Portland. The right-hander suffered his fourth loss in his last start to the Reading Phillies on July 22. He allowed three runs in his first trip through the batting order, but settled down to retire eleven of the final twelve R-Phils he faced. Stoner was tagged for ten hits the last time he faced the Sea Dogs on July 5.
RHP Stephen Fife will make his 18th start of the season and third against the B-Mets. Fife had a five-game winning streak snapped at the hands of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in his last start on July 22. He allowed just two runs over six innings in a game the Sea Dogs dropped by a 2-1 score. Fife’s last win came against Binghamton on July 5. In two starts versus the B-Mets he has gone 1-1 with a 6.10 ERA.
A FEW STREAKS END, ONE CONTINUES: Eric Campbell went 0-for-3 last night and saw his ten-game hitting streak come to an end. He hit .378 (14-37) during the stretch, the longest for any B-Met this season. Raul Reyes watched his seven-game streak come to a close with an 0-for-4 showing. Brahiam Maldonado continued his hot streak with a 2-for-3 night, including an RBI double. Maldonado has hit safely in seven straight games.
DUAL EJECTION: After Brahiam Maldonado’s possible home run was overturned in the third inning, Wally Backman was ejected for the sixth time this year and third time by Jon Saphire. Allan Dysktra struck out looking to end the seventh and was tossed after arguing with home plate umpire Andy Dudones. It was Dykstra’s first ejection of the year. It was the fourth time this season Binghamton has had multiple ejections in a game.
