Mack's Notes - 6-18-06
-Yesterday: - - Well, I’m glad trading Kris Benson won’t come back and bite us…
Pitching coach Rick Peterson said Aaron Heilman’s struggles have been caused by a faulty arm slot. “His angle is too high,” Peterson said, demonstrating where Heilman’s normal three-quarter delivery is and how he currently is releasing the ball with his arm held a bit higher. “It affects his command and his finish. It’s the human element. Everyone goes through it.”… isn’t this the same guy who said he could fix Victor Zembrano’s delivery in an hour?
One day after missing both the team bus and the beginning of the game, Lastings Milledge was on the field roughly four hours before the game doing early work. ..ha ha ha…
Right-hander Lance Cormier was called up to the Atlanta Braves from Triple-A Richmond… have you noticed that team has finally run out of ballplayers?
-Re: Tides: - - The Tides lost 6-3, giving up 16 hits… 2B Jeff Keppinger went 4-4, raising his BA to .303… (not that it matters to Mets brass…) SP Jason Scobie, last year’s big time lights out starter, is now 1-10with a 7.61 ERA… rumors are the brass are considering releasing him, or lining him up against the wall and pumping three into him…
Leading pitchers on the team:
Royce Ring 1.69 21.1/15 27/8
Juan Perez 3.29 38.1/33 32/21

Evan Maclane 3.54 84/80 61/19
John Maine 3.60 45/44 36/14
Xavier Nady is having a very successful rehab here, though he was removed in the 9th inning last night after rising slowly after a collision at home … and then walked tentatively to the dugout. Nady reported there were no problems, saying he was slow to leave the plate area because he thought he’d accidentally spiked the opponent catcher and was checking to see if he was OK.
-B-Mets: - - won 8-2… both Jay Caligiuri and Michel Abreu hit 3-run HRs… Tim McNab started and got the win… thought he was a reliever? Oh well… Henry Owens pitched another scorless inning, lowering his ERA to 0.92… but no Ks this time…
Leading pitchers on the team:

Ivan Maldonado 2.67 33.2/32 38/14
-SLU: - - P Jose Sanchez took the loss in the all-star game tonight, though OF Amp Concepcion homered… maybe now we’ll promote the old man to AAA…
Leading pitchers on the team:
Jacob Ruckle 1.59 45.1/41 20/4
Mike Devaney 1.81 34.1/31 22/4

-H-Town: - - Wow! 11-3! 17 hits! Are we sure we’re talkin’ bout H-Town?... 1B Nick Evans went 4-4, his 11th HR, and 4 ribbys… SP Robert Parnell pitched 6 strong innings for his 2nd good outing in a row..

Jonathan Niese 3.66 66.1/72 80/37
-VSL Mets: - - VSL Mets lost to Mariners, 7-4… SP Nelson Arrichi, holdover from last year’s VSL team, is now 0-3 with a 12.79 ERA… hasta la vista, baby…
-DSL Mets: - - I love this website… below are the top 10 hitters… IN THE LEAGUE:
JOAQUIN GUZMAN DET .385
JOSE MAYI SD .368
JOSE CRUZ DET .350
JOSE CONSTANZA DET .348
JUAN SUAZO DET .346
LUIS SALORZANO NW1 .303
YAN CARLOS HICIANO NW1 .294
JEURI PIMENTEL NYM .286
YOELI FLORENTINO SD .258
YEURY TEJEDA NW2 .222
Are we supposed to honestly believe that the 10th leading hitter in the league is only hitting .222?
-Brooklyn: - - The New York Mets today agreed to terms with RHP Joseph Smith, the club's 2006 third round draft choice from Wright State University (CA). Smith, 22, will be sent to Brooklyn (A) of the New York-Penn League.
-Other Blogs: - - Our friends over at TheButcherTheBaker weren’t too happy with Aaron Heilman… “If the Metropolitans were a revolutionary government, Aaron Heilman would've been told to have an accident while "cleaning his gun" months ago! When's the Thermidor, Omar?
OK. Maybe he'll get his stuff together. But all his whining about not being a starter, combined with some truly awful performances recently, and the guy is just too much to handle at this point. If this team has a strength this year, it's that players are just accepting their roles and doing what they can do to help the team. To be honest, the only player who doesn't seem to be doing that is Heilman, who hasn't stopped bitching about not being in the rotation. Performances like yesterday's and he should be glad to be on the 40-man.
I too think Heilman has stunk up the place, but sometimes you have to pitch your way through this kind of funk… I am particularly upset because it cost my man Soler a victory. I don’t think Heilman has any options so he’d probably have to be designated, thus we’d lose him to some other team… someone correct me if I’m wrong please.
From: TheEdKranepoolSociety: - From the looks of things, Cliff Floyd’s ankle is not getting any better (he has since gone on the DL)and Xavier Nady just about ready to come off the DL, it looks like no matter how much double talk Willie Randolph gives the media, the plan seems in place to activate Nady, disable Floyd and keep Lastings Milledge around for while. Floyd has missed 9 games and looks like he’ll miss a bunch more. When he is ready to go he’ll need a few games of rehab so it looks like Milledge gets at least another 2 weeks of big league employment.
I’m pretty consistent on this… I want a starting outfield of Floyd, Beltran and Nady. But, if Cliff can’t play, then Cliff can’t play. I’ll take Milledge over Chavez, even though Endy’s done nothing wrong… however… and this is a BIG however… no more mustard Lasto or back to Norfolk you go…
-And lastly: - - From: TomSeaverFanClub: - June 17, 1986 Expos 4, Mets 2
Despite jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first, the Mets seven game winning streak came to an end. They Scored two runs on two hits, but they were held scoreless in the final eight innings.
In the meantime, the Expos put up single runs in four different innings to chip away, and then eventually take over, the lead. Bruce Berenyi walked seven batters and gave up three runs on three hits to drop to 2-1 on the season. Mookie Wilson, Tim Teufel and Kevin Mitchell all had two hits. The Mets were unable to draw a single walk in the game, and they struck out eleven times.
