The St. Lucie Mets could not hold off the powerful offensive attack of the Brevard County Manatees dropping a tough loss 14-6. The loss puts the Mets at 17-10 on the second half of the season and 55-42 overall.
Mets starter Greg Peavey ran into trouble right from the get-go. The first six batters he faced reached base as the Manatees rallied off six runs in the first inning. Peavey would be chased from the game after the Manatees loaded the bases in the third inning. Three more runs would score in the frame putting the game out of reach for the Mets at 9-0. John Church was solid in relief of Peavey tossing 4.2 innings of shutout baseball. St. Lucie wouldn’t go quietly. Stefan Welch hit his 11th home run of the year, a solo shot in the second inning making it a 6-1 game. The Mets put up five more runs over the final three innings but could not keep the Manatees off the scoreboard as they scored five in the final two innings as well.
Mike Baxter had three hits for the Mets in his FSL debut, he drove in two and scored once in the loss. Welch also had three hits on the night for St. Lucie. The Mets hammered out 16 hits as every starter recorded a hit in the game. Cory Vaughn hit his fifth home run of the season, a two-run homer that capped off the Mets scoring for the night in the 14-6 loss.
