Greensboro 7, Savannah 6

The Greensboro Grasshoppers snapped the Savannah Gnats six-game winning streak with a 7-6 victory at NewBridge Bank Ballpark Thursday night. The Gnats (21-12/60-42) rallied from a 6-2 deficit to draw within a run, but could not finish the comeback.



Down 6-2 headed to the seventh inning, the Gnats used a pair of home runs in a comeback bid. In the seventh, C Albert Cordero launched his fourth home run of the year, a solo shot to pull the Gnats within three at 6-3. The teams exchanged runs in the eighth inning to make the score 7-4. In the ninth, 1B Joe Bonfe’s two-run home run closed the margin to 7-6, but the Gnats could not get the tying runs on base. Cordero and Bonfe both finished 2-for-4 with a home run. Cordero is now hitting .323/.352/.434 (AVG/OBP/SLG) in 26 games in the second half.



LF Alonzo Harris was also 2-for-4 and tripled for the third time in four games for the Gnats.



Greensboro (16-17/56-47) scored six times in six innings against Savannah starter Yohan Almonte, who was charged with the loss to fall to 4-6. Reliever Gabriel Zavala gave up the ‘Hoppers seventh run in the bottom of the eighth inning.



The Gnats send RHP Ryan Fraser (6-6, 3.51) to the mound against against Greensboro RHP Robert Morey (5-7, 6.67) Friday in game two of the four-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm. The game broadcast on News/Talk 630 WBMQ and sandgnats.com will begin at 7 pm.
