Facing Brock Huntzinger for the fourth time, the B-Mets jumped on the right-hander in the second. Raul Reyes laced a triple to the right field corner to lead off the inning. Dusty Ryan quickly brought him home with the game’s first run with sac fly. The B-Mets doubled their lead in the third on back-to-back two-out doubles by Jordany Valdespin and Allan Dysktra.
B-Mets starter Robert Carson got through the first three innings without much damage. He retired ten of the first eleven he faced before Chih-Hsien Chiang took him deep in the fourth to cut the B-Mets lead in half.
In the sixth, a fielding error by Jordany Valdespin came back to bite Binghamton. Alex Hassan reached to start the inning on the shortstop’s 28th error of the season. He eventually came home to tie the game at two on Tim Federowicz’s sac fly.
The ballgame would not be tied for long. In the bottom half of the sixth, Brahiam Maldonado launched his 19th homer of the season deep over the left field fence against Huntzinger to give Binghamton a 3-2 advantage.
The drive started a six-run inning for the B-Mets. Reyes followed with a single that chased Huntzinger from the game. Caleb Clay came in from the bullpen and turned in a forgettable performance. The right-hander walked the first batter he faced in Ryan and allowed four more hits, including a two-run home run by Valdespin. By the time Dykstra struck out to end the inning, the B-Mets owned an 8-2 lead.
After Brad Holt took over and hurled a perfect seventh, the B-Mets offense went right back to work in the bottom half of the inning. Maldonado was given a gift triple to lead off when Jeremy Hazelbaker misread a fly ball in centerfield. Reyes made the Sea Dogs pay by driving his eighth home run of the season to deep right-centerfield.
A fielding error by Oscar Tejeda at second allowed Ryan to reach and Eric Campbell singled to right field to chase Clay from the game. Campbell’s base hit extended his hitting streak to ten games, the longest for any B-Met this season.
Cesar Cabral got the call from the pen and allowed a single to Jon Malo to load the bases. Matt den Dekker drove in his second run of the game with a sac fly. Jordany Valdespin capped the inning by doubling home a pair to give Binghamton an eleven-run lead.
Brad Holt worked around a two-out single to put up a scoreless eighth and Erik Turgeon fired a scoreless ninth to lock down the victory. Carson (3-8) picked up his first win since June 17, while Huntzinger (5-8) was handed his eighth loss.
The B-Mets (42-61) continue their brief homestand against the Sea Dogs tomorrow night at 6:35pm. RHP Collin McHugh (3-2, 4.28) will square off against RHP Chris Balcom-Miller (2-4, 4.83). The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 6:20pm on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
