The Brooklyn Cyclones (34-24) defeated the Jamestown Jammers (29-30) by a score of 5-2 on Thursday night. The Cyclones have now won four in a row and are tied for the wild card lead. With Staten Island's 1-0 loss to Connecticut tonight, Brooklyn also sit 3.0 games behind first place.
Starting pitcher Eduardo Aldama had his outing cut short by rain midway through the third inning, but still managed to strike out three batters in 2.2 innings. He was relieved by Steve Winnick who tossed an impressive 3.1 scoreless innings, but did not factor into the decision as he left the game tied. It was Tyler Pill (1-0, 4.50) who picked up the victory, working a perfect seventh inning.
A lead off single in the top of the third broke up Aldama's streak of six straight retired Jammers. The right-hander bounced back, quickly inducing two outs on a fly out and a strikeout. However, the Jammers promptly put runners on the corners. Then the rain began to fall and play was halted for an hour and 25 minutes.
Aldama was relieved by Steve Winnick when play resumed. With runners still on the corners, Pedro Mendoza greeted Winnick with a ground ball single up the middle to score the runner from third and move the runner on first up to second. The ball was then misplayed in shallow center by second baseman Ismael Tijerina, allowing the runner on second to advance to third and Mendoza to move up to second. But, Winnick induced a ground out to prevent further damage.
After Winnick held the Jammers scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings, the Cyclones used a pair of wild pitches to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth. Cole Frenzel singled to lead off the frame and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Amauris Valdez promptly ended an 0-for-13 skid by singling up the middle to move Frenzel to third. The first baseman then came in to score on the second wild pitch of the inning, tying the game at 1-1.
After both teams were held scoreless in the sixth inning, Tyler Pill sat Jamestown 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh to give the Cyclones a chance to pull ahead in the seventh.
The Cyclones did just that, breaking up the tie in the bottom of the frame with a four-run inning. Brian Harrison led off with a walk and was plated on Frenzel's line drive double that one-hopped the right field wall, putting Brooklyn up 2-1. Frenzel moved into the third on the play as the right fielder threw home, challenging Harrison. After the bases were promptly loaded on a pair of walks, Frenzel put the Cyclones up 3-1 by scoring on a wild pitch during Danny Muno's at-bat . After the remaining base runners moved up to second and third, Muno doubled off of the right field wall to drive in the fifth run of the game and put two Cyclones in scoring position with no outs. Jamestown then intentionally loaded the bases by giving a free pass to Javier Rodriguez. After the first out of the inning was finally recorded on a ground out, Lucas hit a sac fly to deep center field to drive in the runner from the third and put the Cyclones ahead 5-1.
