Shawn did his part by pitching six innings of shutout baseball, striking out a career-high seven batters and giving up three hits. However, the Bisons didn't do their's, losing to the Mud Hens 4-0 at Coca-Cola Field.
"It was one of those situations when you're caught between the love of your team and the love of the guy pitching, who happens to be your son," Tim said.
Tim hadn't been on the same field as his son since high school when he helped coach Shawn's team. On Thursday, Tim was standing just 90 feet away in the third bases coaching box, this time coaching against his son.
"I was nervous as a dad, it's only the third time I've seen him pitch. He did a remarkable job throwing strikes and being calm about things. He was a lot calmer about things than I was," said Tim.
Shawn didn't seem bothered by the situation, saying that his dad and team mates told him that it's the same in triple-A as it is in single-A as long as you throw strikes and pitch your game.
"It's a good feeling that I helped the team win, and beating pops a little bit, it was fun," said Shawn.
The key moment in Shawn's outing came in the third inning as the Bisons loaded the bases with one. The Bisons were hoping to rally from an early 4-0 deficit, but Shawn struck out Zach Lutz swinging and Valentino Pascucci looking to end the threat.
"Lutz and Pasuccci are run producers, Pascucci leads our team in RBI, they were looking to do some damage, so hats off to Shawn," said Tim. "He got through the bases loaded situation that was the game I think right there when he got Lutz and Pascucci, he made quality pitches."
The only runs the Bisons gave up came in the third inning when Bisons starter Pat Misch walked in one run and then gave up the next three runs on a base hit and a fielder's choice.
It was the first time that a father and son would be on the same field in opposing dugouts since Tim Raines Jr. and Tim Raines Sr. did it on August 21, 2001 in Ottawa.
It was a complete family affair in Buffalo with the Bisons flying in Mrs. Teufel to be here for the big day as Shawn called it.
"I was told last night the Bisons were going to fly her up, it was pretty nice of the Bisons to make her a part of the big day, family battle," Shawn laughed. Shawn added that his mom was rooting for the Mud Hens tonight in his triple-A debut.
Game Notes: Tim Teufel played for the Toledo Mud Hens when he was in the Minnesota farm system, The Mud Hens are now the Detriot Tigers triple-A farm team...Shawn Teufel was born July 16, 1986 the same year that his father would win the World Series with the Mets... Shawn Teufel got a win in his first triple-A start and is currently 1-0 when playing a team his father Tim Teufel is managing.
