B-Mets Baffled by Aeros Pitching in 3-1 Loss
AKRON,OH – Akron starter Giovanni Soto struck out nine over seven innings to lead theAeros past the Binghamton Mets 3-1 Wednesday night at Canal Park. The lossextended the B-Mets losing streak to three games, their longest skid of theseason.
AfterSoto worked a perfect first to start his night, the Aeros took advantage of aB-Mets defensive miscue in the bottom of the inning. Davis Stoneburner led off byshooting a groundball to Rylan Sandoval at short. Sandoval, in his first gameof the season at short, bounced his throw to first past Oswaldo Navarro,allowing Stoneburner to move to second.
TheAeros second baseman advanced to third on a wild pitch by B-Mets starter MarkCohoon and scored on Ryan Rohlinger’s groundout to second.
Akronadded to their lead in the fourth with a three-hit attack. Adam Abraham doubledto left centerfield and scored one batter later on a double from Thomas Neal.Bellows drove Neal home by shooting a single up the middle.
Givena three-run lead, Soto cruised to his third victory of the season. The southpawran right through the B-Mets lineup from the third inning to the fifth,retiring seven in a row.
MarkCohoon’s night ended after five innings. The lefty allowed three runs (twoearned) on five hits and struck out three in the losing effort. He was replacedby Armando Rodriguez, who supplied three perfect innings of relief.
Binghamtonfinally got on the board in the sixth. Oswaldo Navarro followed Matt den Dekker’sleadoff walk with a single to center. Reese Havens collected his third RBI ofthe season with another single.
Sotoescaped further damage by striking out Jefry Marte and turning a line driveback to the mound into a double play by doubling off Havens to end the inning.
The20-year-old from Puerto Rico capped his night with a perfect seventh. Hecollected nine strike outs and allowed just one run on four hits over aseason-high seven innings.
Nursinga 3-1 lead, Kyle Landis entered from the pen and worked around a walk and asingle to post a scoreless eighth. Eric Campbell led off the ninth with adouble to center, but the rally fell short as Landis retired three straight toearn his first save.
Thewin was Akron’s eighth straight and league-leading eleventh at home. Soto (3-0)collected the victory, while Mark Cohoon (2-3) had his two-game winning streaksnapped.
TheB-Mets (12-13) complete their four-game series against the Aeros and wrap uptheir week-long roadtrip tomorrow night at 7:05 PM. RHP Collin McHugh takes theball for Binghamton against RHP Mason Radeke. The Horizons Federal Credit Unionpre-game show begins at 6:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
