FLASH: SP Luis Mateo to undergo Tommy John Surgery

Mack's Mets Pre-Season #9 Prospect RHP Luis Mateo underwent Tommy John Surgery on Tuesday according to Baseball America's Matt Eddy.

The surgery was successful and Mateo is expected to recover and rehab in his native Dominican Republic.

(This is a major set-back for a guy who i thought could've made some noise this season and finished the year in Binghamton. He had just gotten back from a weird injury too and was pitching out of the St. Lucie bullpen so another "fine" job by the Mets team doctors.)

from tomorrow morning's report:

The news that SP Luis Mateo had TJS this week came as little surprise to me and members of my inner circle. Scouts have always tagged him with prospect-like tools, but those inside the Mets organization have always had this feeling that Mateo arrived as damaged goods. You have a hard time trusting a guy that, in the past, lied about his injuries, his age, and his name. Is there something else we should believe here? Do yourself a favor here. Forget about this guy until this time next year and don’t be surprised if he never came back.
