Staten Island 5 - Brooklyn 2
After having their home opener rained out on Tuesday, the Cyclones were on the road again today as they fell to Staten Island 5-2.
RHP Miller Diaz didn’t start the 2013 season the way he wanted to, lasting only 4.2 inning, giving up five runs, two earned, seven hits and one walk, while striking out four.
The Yankees started the scoring in the bottom of the second when they pushed across two runs. Miller Diaz was able to retire the first two batters of the inning before back-to-back singles by Kale Sumner and Bubba Jones, respectively. Francisco Rosario then doubled to deep center field scoring both runners, giving the Yankees a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, Derek Toadvine and Michael O’Neill singled to start off the inning. Brandon Thomas then came up and grounded into a force-out at second base to put runners at the corner with one out. With Yeicok Calderon batting, Thomas stole second base to put runners at second and third with one out. Calderon would then strikeout for the second out of the inning bringing up Isaias Tejeda who lofted a fly ball to left field that was botched by Eris Peguero, allowing both runners to score, and putting Tejeda at second. Kale Sumner then stepped up and singled up the middle scoring Tejeda and giving the Baby Bombers the 5-0 lead in the third inning.
The Cyclones were finally able to break through in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, L.J. Mazzilli doubled to left field before moving to third base on a passed ball with Gavin Cecchini up to bat. After Cecchini was unable to score Mazzilli from third, Matt Oberste singled to center to push across Brooklyn's first run.
In the top of the ninth inning, trailing 5-1, Oberste stepped up to the plate and connected for his first professional home run as it went over the left field wall to narrow the deficit to 5-2. There would be no late inning heroics though, as the Cyclones would not put up another hit in the ninth.
