Needless to say, we need a few critical players to fill slots this year with the hopes of making us competitive in 2019.

Wealso know we have a limited amount of 'red chip' prospects in the upper levels of the pipeline, which would limit trade abilities.
Lastly, with Alonso, McNeil, and Rosario, we already have a talented infield.
Question...
Do we dangle and eventually trade Andres Gimenez to achieve one of our short term goals?

Other than a salary dump, I never look at a trade as from the supply side (who would I trade X for? What would Y get me?)
I'll pursue a want/need and THEN evaluate price. Would like to procure Realmuto? Sure; would I give Gimenez, Dunn & Nimmo? (Probably not) Giminez, Mazeika & D.Peterson? (A probable maybe)
Gimenez: Overrated. Nice give, small bat.
Gimenez likely lost trade value after a poor performance over 50+ at bats in Arizona. So to me, his future has gotten murkier. Miguel Andujar he is not.
If I’m the GM, I make a decision on who I want to go forward with at SS, Rosario or Gimenez, and the other one is available as part of a package for the right piece. My sense right now is that Rosario is the better offensive player, and Gimenez May end up being more valuable on D. My gut says keep Rosario, Though my gut doesn’t get to see Gimenez play very much, so take that for what it’s worth.
I happen to be a big fan of Rosario after watching his second half. To me Gimenez future with the mets is as a second baseman. He is based on scouting reports sort of a little more than reuben tejada plus speed. So he's a 280 hitter instead of 265. He's a 14 hr guy instead of a ten hr guy. Plus 20-30 stolen bases and good not great defense. That a pretty good ml player. Would I use gimenez as a central piece to acquire a 5 year catching solution? yes. Would I trade him for second tier veteran, absolutely not. Otherwise I think he can be a nice compliment to rosario as part of a 2b/3b rotation.
Btw: rosario is a mcuh bigger guy then i thought, he's like 6'2 not 5'9. More easy power to come I think. then again I really like rosario's second half. its like he got smarter once he was moved to the front of the lineup.
Robb, Rosario is very athletic, and seemingly on the rise, hopefully rapid and steep.
I think Jeff McNeil's emergence (if it is legit), solves the second base question for the immediate future. So, Gimenez has one less route to MLB........I think he can be a solid SS, but you only make that move if Rosario is able to play 3B, IMO.
To answer the question directly, I would deal him in the right package to address a weakness.
I am still would like to see Rosario batting second in Centerfield and Gimenez at short batting lead off. I will always love the Mookie/Dykstra and Backman combo to lead things off.
I would only put Giminez at short because they say his defense is way better than Rosario’s.
Thomas, I felt that Giminez was overrated from what I saw in Spring Training. As a 19 year old, I don’t hold the Arizona stats against him. In fact, I give him an “A” for effort, but he’s small and if he’s Omar Vizquel, we’re happy, but that’s it. I like Rosario’s overall package better and always have.
TexasGus, it seems the Mets have too many overrated/over-hyped prospects, and too few underrated, under-hyped ones like, say, Jeff McNeil.
Anyone can under-perform over a short stretch (except Vlad Jr, of course), but let's hope Gimenez's poor AFL stint was a youthful anomaly, and that he is indeed the real deal. I agree that Rosario is a great athlete naturally

I'd add the corollary, "Remember the trade route, too!" Sandy Alderson didn't do that except in salary dumps and then he proved to be a poor judge of talent.
Gimemez is still a quality prospect despite his weak AFL. From what the scouts say, what he lacks in power he makes up with baseball nstincts and speed. Those skills are currently undervalued in today's game, but they never totally go out of style.
I agree that his trade stock is down, but he could still be part of a package and I'd be willing to deal him for the right player.
