Tony Plate - Jacob deGrom wins NL Cy Young Award

PC - Scott Cunningham

Jacob deGrom of the New York Mets was the best pitcher in the National League in 2018. His fantastic statistics enabled him to win the National League Cy Young Award. He received 29 out of the 30 first-place votes. deGrom was dominant. He gave up no more than three runs in his last twenty-nine starts which was a single-season record. He finished the season with a 10-9 record, a 1.70 ERA, 32 games started, 217 innings pitched, 269 strikeouts, allowing 10 home runs and 46 walks. The one vote that did not go to deGrom went to Max Scherzer who finished the season 18-7 with a 2.53 earned run average. Scherzer had won the Cy Young Award the previous two seasons.
deGrom has said that he would be open to the possibility of a long-term contract which he deserves now that he has won the Cy Young Award. Since that is the case Mets fans hope that the Wilpons give the approval to Brodie Van Wagenen to go all out and extend the contract of deGrom through the 2023 season. He has been a front- line type of pitcher and the ace of the starting rotation. He has had a superb earned run average during the last five years. deGrom needless to say has been consistent and reliable. He is the leader of the Mets starting rotation.

DeGrom has the support of his former agent Brodie Van Wagenen. During the summer Van Wagenen offered his opinion and said that the Mets should sign deGrom to a long-term deal or trade him. The Mets were thinking of trading deGrom at one point during last season, but those talks were never serious which turned out for the better for the Mets. deGrom is under team control through 2020. Since deGrom had that kind of a season you would think that the new general manager would make extending deGrom one of the first tasks during the offseason. If they do not extend deGrom now the team will regress. The Mets are not ready for a complete rebuild, because they have a good young core of players that could keep them in contention for the next couple of years. The Mets may be in the postseason in 2019 especially since their starting rotation will be back. When you have a rotation like that it would enable you to contend for the next few years. Van Wagenen would have to upgrade the catcher position and the bullpen to be serious contenders. Congratulations to Jacob deGrom on winning the Cy Young Award.

Well deserved and it is petty that he didn't get ALL of the votes.

Regardless, he was rewarded for an awesome year and I hope we can
get him extended prior to 2019.

DeGrom was awesome. sign him to a 5 year deal with a pair of vesting options.

Here's my plan for Mets off season.

Sign Corbin 5x22.5 million
Extend Degrom
Extend Wheeler

Trade Thor to Padres for Tatis Jr. and their young catching prospect

Sign Ramos 2x10 million maybe 3rd year club option
Sign Miller 3x10
Sign Robertson 3x10

You're off to the races and should be good for the next 2-4 years only filling in around the edges. I would not offer wilmer or d'arunaud contracts to save money and roster spots. You're going to spike the payroll for 1 year but you have Frazier, Vargas and Anthony S coming off at the end of 2019 and a ton of money coming off the year after with Cespedes, Bruce and any thing that remains of Wrights deal. The Mets really need to go for it now. It's the right time to spend on some key pieces and trade Thor. I'll miss him but if he brings back Tatis and another blue chip prospect that's a great deal.

Think like a Mets front office. deGrom, off his Cy Young, is apt to get $13 million in arbitration this year, more next year and then more still in his subsequent FA years.

Instead of the "Trade Thor" talk, maybe they would be shrewder to dangle Jake to pitching-hungry suitors. He's older, more expensive and you'd be selling high off his CYA season.

I see it more of making the best team for 2019- 2024, in which neither deGrom or Syndergaard are traded.
Or
Make the best team for 2020-2025 in which case all of the pitchers should be traded for prospects that would start (even though young) in the majors in 2019 and flourish in 2020+.

Or trade everybody in the organization to make the best team in 2929...

When will this end???

I agree mack.

There is an golden opportunity this off season to make a very strong team for the next 3-5 years. This would also allow the strength of the lower minor league players to reach the upper levels.

Of course, this would include acquiring the most talented infielder in free agency and the most talented catcher available for trade.
Add in an Adam Jones in Centerfield for 1 or 2 years and some bullpen pieces and the Mets have not only a competitive team. It could be the favored team in the National league.

Best part, the majority of the lineup and starting pitchers would be in place for the next few years.
