Mack - Draft Thoughts: Josh Kasevich, Mitchell Daly, Riley Stanford, Cadan Dana, Justin Crawford

8-16-21 - Prospects Live - Pacific Northwest Prospects -

JOSH KASEVICH

Shortstop         Oregon

2021 Ducks stat line - 55-G, 216-AB, .324/.397/.444, 4-HR

Kasevich is a contact-oriented hitter with very low strikeout rates and a healthy amount of walks. He's got a ton of pop in the bat, with comfortably plus raw power. That said, Palo Alto, Calif. product sometimes struggles to get into it in-game thanks to an inside-out swing and a flatter bat path. He's got the frame and strength to suggest he could tap into more game power as he continues to grow and mature into his game-swing. The batted-ball data here is enormous, so it’s just a matter of tinkering with the swing a bit to unlock more impact at the plate. He's played shortstop at Oregon and some evaluators believe he could end up at the position long-term if he doesn't outgrow the spot thanks to a big, plus arm and fringy speed. Kasevich has fantastic infield instincts and good burst to get to more balls than his pure foot speed would suggest. There are some similarities between Kasevich and Jordan Westburg from the 2020 MLB Draft. The tools here are significant and certainly worthy of a Top 100 selection if it all clicks in 2022.

Mack's spin -

I like what I see so far from Kasevich.

I am very curious to see if he ups the anty this season.

Right now, I have him as my 11th SS.

 8-13-21 - ProspectsLive - Sleeper Breakout Candidate -

 MITCHELL DALY, SECOND BASE, TEXAS

Among the players listed here, Daly might have the most to prove, but the clay is good. In 256 at-bats for the Longhorns this year, Daly slashed .316/.413/.416 with two homers. His 16 percent K-rate is above average, while his contact rate of 80 percent is also above average. Daly is a very selective hitter, swinging at just 39 percent of pitches thrown his way. That keen eye resulted in a walk-rate over 12 percent.

Daly sets up with a squared stance, hands out in front away from his body with some waggle. He’s got an up-the-middle approach with a flat swing. His below average power is squarely to his pull-side, but he has shown the ability to pepper the opposite field gap. Daly has long levers and a slender torso. That said, most of Daly’s mass is in his lower half. He’s only an average runner, but he’s got good instincts on the base paths and can steal a bag.

Mack's spin -

2021 Longhorns stat line - 61-G, 209-AB, .316/.413/.603, 2-HR, 41-K

 Nice stat line.

We always need more second basemen to step up, They usually wind up to be shortstops that are moved over the base as they move up the team's chain.

Right now... early... he's #2 on my 2B list.

8-12-21 - Talking Chop - Georgia Prospects -

Riley Stanford, RHP/OF, Buford HS -

Riley Stanford is a projectable arm who can reach 97 MPH with his fastball and has a nasty slider when on. He is also a significant power bat.

Mack's spin -

This is a tough call.

Right now, I have Stanford as my 13th RHP; however, I think he is going to wind up an outfielder. He has huge power.

It will be inyeresting to see what position he is drafted for.

 8-8-21 - BA  -

 Caden Dana, RHP (New York)

Dana matched up opposite Dutkanych during PG National and both pitchers faced six batters and struck out six to create a dynamic pitcher’s duel over two frames. Dana is a 6-foot-5 righthander listed a 225 pounds who showed one of the better breaking balls at PG National, a 74-79 downer with 12-6 shape and spin in the 2300-2500 rpm range.

Dana paired that curveball with a fastball in the 92-94 mph range at PG National and four of his six strikeouts ended with the heater. In total in this outing, he generated seven whiffs with his fastball and four with the breaking ball. He also flashed an 87-mph changeup, but primarily worked with the fastball/curveball combination.

 Mack's spin -

I currently have him as my 32nd RHP.

8-5-21 - Prospects Live

 Justin Crawford

It’s uncanny how much Justin resembles his dad, former MLBer Carl Crawford, especially when you see the tools he brings to the table. Not only does Justin look like his dad, but he runs like him too, posting a 6.11 60-yard time with a 1.53 10-yard split. He gets up to speed quickly and possesses an elite top gear. Crawford isn’t a one trick player though, he showed very quick hands and good feel to hit in-game, putting the ball in play with solid contact and racking up multiple hits across the week. It’s a true centerfield profile with elite speed, a solid arm and a top of the lineup profile at the plate.

Mack's spin -

Prospects Live has him as an 80-grade runner.

Tremendous projection.

I didn't have Crawford on my OF board until this ink. For now, I slot him in at #21.
