IN FOCUS - Canning, Minter, Lindor - Yesterday's Highlights

Mets Analytics                   @MetsAnalytics

After another divisional win, the Mets’ playoff odds are at a season-high 85.5%.

Team tjStuff+

In 2025, the MLB average tjStuff+ is 101.6. The model was trained on data from 2020-24 with the average pitch being assigned 100.

This means that Stuff is up drastically across the league. Colder weather and less fatigued pitchers along with power creep is likely the reason

Mack –

Is this good?

John Harper                        @NYNJHarper

I've been on high alert re Edwin Diaz but actually thought he was impressive last night. On the attack with FB, and though the 0-2 HR pitch to Stott caught way too much plate, he knew he had wiggle room, was unfazed, and K'd Turner and Harper on 7 pitches, getting BH to chase sliders.

Daniel Wexler                    @WexlerRules

Dylan Tebrake 630 days between appearances (hip surgery

St. Lucie 1B Trace Wilhoite is now 18th in the league in wRC+ despite signing with Mets just over a month ago. He’s old for the level (24) but still an impressive start to his pro career

Missed this... Jett Williams missed both games over the weekend. Something to monitor

8.1 innings is only 8.1 innings but Frank Elissalt currently has a 15.12 K/9 in 2025 (leads all Mets minor league pitchers with at least 8 innings pitched). Not bad for a 19th round pic

Zach Thornton has been so utterly dominant so far that you're forced to look at the sample size and say "it's only 16 innings".  16 innings *0* er, 2.00 FIP, 12.38 k/9

14 Mets minor league pitchers have thrown at least 10 innings, 10 have a sub 4.00 FIP, 8 have a k/9 over 10.00

Eduardo Herrera to the Development List for Cyclones. Herrera in 2025 6 innings 1 hit allowed 6 k's. Herrera provided valuable pitching depth to Mets system in 2024 (4 teams) after signing with Mets in June. Solid pickup

Old for the level but Nick Lorusso is off to a nice start in Bing. .270/.341/.486- 140 wRC+, elevated but not terrible K% (26.8). He's split his time at 1b/3B/DH

Slow start for 2024 1st rounder Carson Benge. .220/.333/.293 with a concerning 27.1% k

Luis De Los Santos (who somehow was in the mix to make the club OD) is hitting .183/.210/.267 with a 32.3$ k%... 21 wRC+

Also old for the level (24 next month) but D'Andre Smith is off to a nice start for Cyclones .294/.405/.382- 135 wRC+, identical 16.7 K/BB% and 7 steals. I wouldn't be shocked to see him aggressively pushed to Bing in the near future

Ernest Dove             @ernestdove

Not sure how long he'll be in High A but Mets RP prospect Ryan Lambert so far through 5 app:

6 inn    3 H    1 ER    0 BB    13 K

Final line on Mets P prospect Jonah Tong tonight in AA

4.1 inn    3 H    2 ER    3 BB    9 K

53 of 90 for strikes

Always important to keep eye on his command.

Mets Player Development                     @MetsPlayerDev

What a day for Marco Vargas!
He went 4 for 5 including his first home run of the year yesterday. He's hitting .438/.561/.594 this season!

Juan Soto has put 5 balls in play over the past 2 games and has been retired on each of them:

.250 xBA groundout to pitcher

.723 xBA groundout to second

.370 xBA groundout to short

.498 xBA groundout to third

.697 xBA lineout to second

Hagen Snell                         @HagenSnellBB

Luisangel Acuña's bat is getting there. The glove and his speed might already be his ticket to staying in the big leagues.

With a few strong weeks and unique talent, Acuña is endearing himself to his Mets coaches and perhaps earning a longer stay

The 2025 Mets have tied the 2015 Mets for the best home start to a season in franchise history (10-1)

Farm To Flushing               @FarmToFlushing

St. Lucie reliever Chandler Marsh has literally been perfect this season.

7.2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 11 SO

An undrafted MiLB free agent out of Georgia that the Mets signed in 2024. A diamond in the rough.

Nate Dohm puts together a solid start for St. Lucie.

4 IP, 4 H, ER, 0 BB, 7 SO, 59 pitches/ 45 strikes

A new season high in strikeouts for Dohm.

Jeremy Rodriguez with the walk-off walk! St. Lucie beats Daytona 3-2 in 10 innings.

3B Colin Houck: 1-for-4, R, HR (3), RBI

LF Yohairo Cuevas: 1-for-3, RBI, BB

RHP Irving Cota: 4 IP, H, 0 ER, BB, SO, 0.68 ERA

Michael Baron                    @michaelgbaron

Pete Alonso has hits in six of his last seven games, during which he has hit .400/.500/.840 with ten hits, three doubles, a triple, two home runs, six RBI, five walks, and four runs scored

There seems to be a debate on what to do with Luisangel Acuña when Jeff McNeil gets back right now. I don't think there's a debate. Find McNeil playing time and leave Acuña in as the every-day second baseman

Luisangel Acuña has a nine-game hitting streak, during which he is hitting .387/.441/.516 with 12 hits, four doubles, five stolen bases, and nine runs scored.

Tylor Megill’s 1.09 ERA through a pitcher’s first five starts of a season is the fourth-best in franchise history, behind only Jacob deGrom (0.51 ERA, ‘21), Frank Viola (0.58 ERA, ‘90), and Nolan Ryan (1.02 ERA, ‘68

Mathew Brownstein        @MBrownstein89

Tylor Megill is the first Mets pitcher to allow no runs, no more than one hit and record double-digit strikeouts in a start since Jacob deGrom on June 11, 2021

OptaSTATS                          @OptaSTATS

The Mets  are the first team in the modern era (since 1901) to have their starting pitchers allow fewer than 15 runs (13 runs allowed) and no homers in their first 11 home games of a season.

Dan Bartels             @DanBartels2

Best Records in MLB:

Los Angeles Dodgers: 16-7

San Diego Padres 16-7

New York Mets 16-7

The Mets (+31) have the third highest run differential to the Cubs (+41) and Padres (+33) in all of baseball.

Mack ,
I enjoy the IN FOCUS columns. It is the best overall Met "wrap-up" on the internet. Keep em coming! We may not always comment, but we are certainly reading them.

Thank you DJ
I post them on times alloted to me. Mostly 5am. A couple, like this one, at 9am
Made room for the return of Tom which is well worth it
Reading is great
Commenting is a cherry on top

in general, I am not in favor of 'proposed' trades, generably looking upon them as mental masterbation; however, the Mets are in 'good' trouble. they have so many good relievers and starters, who are performing well in the majors, but out of options + on the IL but ready to come up soon, or are in the minors and banging on the ceiling, that they're going to be forced to thin the herd with trade(s). Mack, maybe you could get David Stern, or his fly-on-the-wall to let us know what they're thinking, that could really be interesting.

Hope all goes well for you at the Mayo.

The season is off to a great start including some minor leaguers playing well. I am concerned with Mendoza constantly pulling our starters in the sixth inning with not even 90 pitches yet. I think the high pitch count is 91 so far. This is the perfect recipe to just wear our bullpen. They all have been pitching great so far but will not last with over usage. Young is the only reliever that could easily be replaced, our starters should be able to get to 100 pitches this far into the season. Mendoza did the same thing last year and really ruined Garret. Let the pitchers PITCH!

Tons of great stuff…and a sweep. Dang. Edwin hurt?

Tom Brennan said...

I think the pen overuse yesterday was with an eye to a day off on Thursday. I also think they will inch up those pitch counts by another 5-10 pitches with warmer weather. But the formula is working.

Mack, hopefully the Mayo visit is fruitful and very positive.
