Syracuse

In his Triple-A debut, Felipe De La Cruz dazzled with six scoreless innings, leading the Syracuse Mets to a 6-3 victory over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. De La Cruz struck out nine batters during the game and retired the final 17 batters he faced.

Syracuse (14-17) started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a spark at the top of the order. Donovan Walton led off with a double, and Drew Gilbert hit another double off the wall in right-center field to bring Walton home and put the Mets ahead, 1-0. Later in the inning, Joey Meneses pushed an RBI single into right field that scored Gilbert to make it 2-0.

For the next five innings, Syracuse held a 2-0 lead thanks to fantastic pitching from De La Cruz. The 23-year-old left-hander tossed six innings and only allowed one hit, didn’t walk anyone, and struck out nine while retiring 18 of the 20 batters he faced.

In the seventh inning, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s (15-15) offense came alive. The RailRiders scored three runs to tie the game at 3-3, putting pressure on the Mets lineup to score again.

Syracuse came out swinging in the bottom of the seventh and stormed back to retake the lead. To start the frame, Gilberto Celestino singled, Luke Ritter walked, and Hayden Senger singled. With the bases loaded, Walton drew a walk to score Celestino and put the Mets in front, 4-3. The next batter, Gilbert, hit a sacrifice fly to right field that brought in Ritter to give Syracuse a 5-3 lead. To continue the hot hitting, Jon Singleton smacked an RBI single into right field that scored Senger and put the Mets ahead, 6-3.

In the final two frames, the Syracuse bullpen stepped up to shut it down. Rico Garcia tossed a scoreless eighth inning and Anthony Gose closed the door in the ninth to secure the victory.

Binghamton

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (14-10) split a doubleheader against the Erie SeaWolves (16-9) on Friday night at UPMC Park. The two teams have split the first four games of the series.

Game One: Rumble Ponies 4, Seawolves 1

The Rumble Ponies belted a trio of RBI doubles and Nolan McLean (3-1) pitched six scoreless frames to win the first game of the doubleheader. William Lugo got the Ponies on the board with an RBI double off the high wall in left in the fourth inning, his third RBI hit over the last two games.

In the fifth, Jett Williams and Nick Lorusso hit a pair of doubles that extended the Ponies lead to 3-0. In the sixth, Yonny Hernandez’ RBI single to left extended the lead to 4-0. Lorusso finished the game 2-for-2 with an RBI and run scored, reaching base three times.

McLean tied his career-high for innings pitched in a start, earning the win and dropping his ERA to 1.37 on the season. It is the second time he has gone six innings in a start this year.

Game Two: SeaWolves 3, Rumble Ponies 0

After Binghamton starter Jonathan Pintaro retired the first nine batters he faced, Trei Cruz hit the first of his two solo home runs on the night to lead off the fourth to put Erie on the board. Cruz would add another homer in the sixth to extend Erie’s lead to 3-0.

Pintaro (0-2) took the loss despite allowing just two runs and three hits over four and two thirds innings. Erie starter Garrett Burhenn (3-0) allowed just two hits over five innings with no walks and four strikeouts. He combined with two relievers for a three-hit shutout.

Jett Williams led off the game with a single and added a double in the sixth inning to extend his on-base streak to 13 games.

Postgame Notes: With a double in each game, Williams now has seven on the year…Alex Ramírez finished 2-for-3 with a double and run scored in game one…Binghamton had four doubles in the first game…D’Andre Smith made a tremendous diving catch in right in the fifth inning of game two in his Double-A debut.

Brooklyn

The Brooklyn Cyclones improved to 16-8 on the young season with a 3-2 win over the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Friday night at Maimonides Park. Major League All-Star RHP Paul Blackburn made the start for Brooklyn as part of his MLB Rehab Assignment, and allowed two runs over 3.0 innings. CF A.J. Ewing led the offensive charge for the ‘Clones going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI.

After trading zeroes in the first, Brooklyn opened the scoring in the bottom of the 2nd. 1B Jacob Reimer got things started with a leadoff single and 2B Marco Vargas followed with a walk that a pair of runners aboard with nobody out. After a wild pitch advanced the pair into scoring position, Ewing singled to center field giving Brooklyn a 2-0 edge, and moving himself to second on the throw to the plate. Two batters later, Ewing came home on a fielder’s choice to extend the Cyclone lead to 3-0.

Blackburn, who was making his second rehab start with the Cyclones, was dominant through his first 2.0 innings, striking out five batters. But in the third the big leaguer ran into trouble. 3B Murphy Stehly led off the frame with a solo homer and DH Caleb Lomavita added an RBI double that made it 3-2. But Blackburn was able to escape the frame without any further damage and keep the ‘Clones on top.

That would be all the offense in the game, as RHP R.J. Gordon (3-0) tossed 4.1 innings of relief, allowing just a pair of hits and three walks while striking out four. The former Oregon Duck left the game with one out in the 8th and the tying run aboard, but RHP Anthony Nunez induced a double play to end the frame. Nunez then tossed a spotless ninth to close out the game.

St. Lucie

The Jupiter Hammerheads pitched a two-hit shutout in a 4-0 victory over the St. Lucie Mets in the series opener on Friday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.

The Hammerheads improved to 3-1 against the Mets this season. All three Jupiter victories have been shutouts. Those are the only shutouts suffered by the Mets this season.

Jupiter took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Mets starter Will Watson walked three batters to load the bases and Abrahan Ramirez hit a two-out, two-run single to make it 2-0.

Victor Mesa, Jr. stung a RBI single against Watson in the second inning to make it 3-0.

The Hammerheads scored the game’s final run in the third inning on a two-out RBI single by Jacob Jenkins-Cowart off Mets reliever Wellington Aracena.

The Mets offense piled up the base runners but couldn’t muster a big hit. Colin Houck hit a double as the third batter of the game. Vincent Perozo hit a one-out single in the second inning. That would be the final St. Lucie hit. The Mets worked eight walks and were hit by pitches three times. However, they went 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position and stranded 13 base runners.

Watson took the loss. The Hammerheads grinded him for 60 pitches over 2.0 innings. Watson was charged with three runs on three hits and four walks.

Aracena pitched 3.0 innings of relief and gave up one run on two hits.

Mookie had the big 2 out come-from-behind game winning homer in a game where the Mets, to that point, somehow had just 5 runs on 22 hits. That was a party.

Orellana is another gem on the rise.

Soto’s double? The announcers quickly said, “that would have been a HR in Yankee Stadium.” Hence my frequent point.

And St Louis in the 1980s had that deep 414 fence to dead center? Now, it is 400. I want 400 at Citifield, too.

Mookie

I've told this story before

He became a minor league roving coach and, when he came to Savannah, he and I used to sit in the dugout while the players ate a pre-game meal, and shoot the shit about the old days. Great guy.

Mookie did it on Sept 20, 1981, and as a correction, Mookie’s homer gave the Mets a 7-6 win, on 22 total hits.

Yu're not sucking me into a discussion on this. It's like discussing the value of tariffs.
