7/7/10

Justin Schafer, Brett Mitchell, Baseball Team 4-Sale: $500mil, Javier Rodriquez... and Jeff Flagg

Justin Schafer:

7-7-10 – Stock Up – Schafer is one of a handful of 2010 draft picks that are making some noise for K-Port. His stats for the short season so far are very impressive: .366/.409/.512/.921, 41-AB, .146-ISOP, .441-BABIP

2009: Led Aggies in batting (.338), runs (31), stolen bases (7) and on-base average (.411)... Started 38 of 41 games... Mostly split his starts at second (19) or third (15)... Hit 50-for-148 for the season, striking out just 13 times... Improved to 33-for-87 (.379) with .517 slugging in Big West Conference games... Broke out of slow start with 4-for-4 game at San Diego State (4/4)... Enjoyed a consecutive-game hitting streak of 10 games soon after (4/10-4/24), batting 14-for-39 (.359)... Later hit safely in 12 straight contests in a 22-for-49 (.449) tear, mostly against conference opponents... Finished with 17 multi-hit games... Launched first collegiate home run in 2nd inning vs. Pacific (3/28).

2008: Played 12 games before season ended due to injury... Granted clock extension by NCAA due to medical hardship... Made six starts at third base... Batted .217 (5-for-23) with 4 runs scored and 3 doubles... Went 3-for-6 with two doubles in first two games of the season vs. Fresno State (2/22-2/23).

2007: Started 34 of 40 games played as a true freshman, mostly at shortstop... One of six Aggies to hit better than .300 (.301, 37-for-123)... Added 12 walks and 5 HBP to vault on-base average to .383... Hit 2-for-4 vs. Pepperdine in collegiate debut (2/9), then was 2-for-3 with 2 runs the following day... Had 10 multi-hit games... Batted 3-for-3 wth a double vs. Portland (3/3)... Hit 3-for-5 vs. Loyola Marymount later in the month (3/25)... Drove in 2 RBIs in 2-for-3 game vs. San Francisco (4/24).

5-13-09 from: - www.losgatosobserver.com/2009/05/13/where_are ... - With a Los Gatos contingent of at least 50 fans rooting him on, Los Gatos High School graduate Justin Schafer smashed three hits, including two doubles, Tuesday night as his UC Davis Aggies beat Santa Clara 9-1 at the Bronco’s Stephen Schott Stadium. Schafer, a redshirt sophomore, upped his team-leading batting average to .345 and team-leading on-base percentage to .415. He is currently riding an eight-game hitting streak, with multiple hits in six of those games.

The infielder is coming off a medical-redshirt year and Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. He got off to a sluggish start this season while still getting back to full strength, but has been one of the conference’s hottest hitters the past four weeks. As a freshman, Schafer started 34 of 40 games, mostly at shortstop. He was one of six Aggies to hit better than .300 (.301 with 37 hits), with 10 multi-hit games. Schafer hopes to return to shortstop next season after playing mostly second and third base this year.

Brett Mitchell:

7-7-10: - Mitchell pitched another gem last night and we need to add him to our watch list for The Keepers… stats so far this season: 3-G, 2-1, 1.65, 0.97, 2.20-RA9, .300-BABIP, 2.26-FIP

Baseball Team 4-Sale: $500mil

Got half a billion dollars? The Texas Rangers are expected to go on the auction block next week after an unexpected snag in the team's bankruptcy plans. But don't call your banker just yet. Major League Baseball has set some strict guidelines for potential bidders, including a US$1.5 million deposit and an opening bid of more than $500 million. A group led by Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan and Pittsburgh attorney Chuck Greenberg is still an expected favourite to buy the team. Angry team creditors say their bid shouldn't have been accepted in the first place. - link

Javier Rodriquez:

7-6-10 from: - link  - Appalachian League Offensive Player of the Week - Javier Rodriguez, Kingsport - .517/.517/.862, 15-for-29, 4 2B, 0 3B, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 5 R, 0 BB, 4 K, 0 SB - Mets '08 second-rounder Javier Rodriguez went 3-for-6 with a double and a run scored over a week-opening doubleheader, and he banged out three more singles and a homer over the next two games as well. His Friday and Saturday performances, though, really stand out. He hit his second homer in as many games and also doubled Friday, driving in five runs and scoring twice. On Saturday, he was 4-for-5 with two doubles, three RBIs and another run scored

Old stuff on J-Rod:

The Mets drafted Rodriguez in the 2nd round of the 2008 draft. In June 2008, BA did a post-draft adjustment of their top 10 Mets prospects and Rodriquez was ranked #9, with the comments: “9. Javier Rodriguez, of - 2008 second-rounder is a lean athlete with speed and projectable power.”

In 2008, Rodriguez batted .193 for the GCL Mets.

In February 2009, Toby Hyde said: #15 - CF Javier Rodriguez - Why Ranked Here: Athleticism, athleticism and athleticism. The lanky Rodriguez lopes across centerfield with plus range already. It’s like he’s built with springs in his cleats. As Mets fans who watch and appreciate Carlos Beltran’s play should know, playing center is not just about being a burner and Rodriguez already gets good reads of the bat. Rodriguez’s long swing prevented him from making good consistent contact, although once underway, he showed fine batspeed. He has room to fill out on his wiry frame, which will bring more power into his game. 2008: Hitting .193/.258/.237 is fine in a 38 game professional debut in the GCL, but would be acceptable for a prospect in almost no other league. Projected 2009 Start: Savannah with a good Spring Training. XST is a possibility as well.

In February 2009, World of Baseball ranked J-Rod the 7th top prospect out of Puerto Rico: 7. Javier Rodriguez OF (Mets) - He’s still a teenager, drafted in the second round in 2008. His first exposure to rookie ball he only hit .193, but he shows all five tools. Whether he can put them together will decide how far he advances. Despite his poor average he only had 27 K’s in 38 games so he was making contact. A good spring will give the Mets confidence to start him in low A, otherwise he will have to play in extended spring training until the Rookie leagues begin, or Javier shows the readiness to handle low A.

In March 2009, Joe DeMayo wrote: Mets Prospect #14: OF Javier Rodriguez - Rodriguez, a Mets 2nd round draft pick in 2008 out of Puerto Rico is the one of, if not the most athletic prospect in the Mets system. At the young age of 18 he is already playing center field like a pro. Unfortunately hitting wasn’t a strength for “J-Rod” in his pro debut. He hit a mere .193 in the Gulf Coast League, but he still has immense potential. He is very rail thin at this point(163 pounds), but at his young age, he is still very likely to build up some. A major issue with Rodriguez’s offensive game is the length of his swing, which is what led to 27 strikeouts in 38 games in his professional debut. He needs to either work on shortening his stroke, or develop more bat speed or he’s going to get a real lot of strikeouts throughout his minor league career. There is no doubt though about Rodriguez’s defense and speed. I don’t like to compare anyone to Beltran, but scouts say Rodriguez has the graceful range similar to that of Beltran. He was a very high pick by the team, and they see a lot of potential in him.

http://myworldofbaseball.com/wordpress/?m=200910  - Javier Rodriguez OF (Mets) - Javier was a second round selection of the Mets in 2008. He attended the Puerto Rican Baseball Academy that was created to renew the baseball talent in Puerto Rico. His best tool should be his speed, though his stolen base totals his last two years have been just two. He only hit .230 in the Rookie Gulf Coast League this year and he struck out 39 times in 36 games. If Javier wants to take advantage of his speed he needs to improve that OBA (.285). He won’t be hitting out of the leadoff spot if he doesn’t get on base.

1-1-10: - Forecast: Many Mets sources say that J-Rod is real prospect material, though he has gotten off to a slow start. My guess would be that he is showcased in Brooklyn come next spring.

Jeff Flagg:

7-6-10 from: - link  - New York-Penn League Offensive Player of the Week - Jeff Flagg, Brooklyn - .440/.516/.840, 11-for-25, 2 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 6 R, 4 BB, 7 K, 2 SB - Jeff Flagg, who started the year with serious troubles at the dish in the Sally League (.162 batting average, one home run, six RBIs and 40 strikeouts in 105 trips to the plate), is rediscovering what makes him a pro in the New York-Penn League. The Mets prospect homered on Monday and Wednesday, doubled in his final two games of the week and also tripled in his last one. Apparently a real patriot, Flagg was flying high on the Fourth of July -- he went 3-for-3, missing the cycle by a home run, plating three runs and crossing the plate three times himself.

Old stuff on Jeff:

Selected by New York Mets in 27th Round (824th overall) of 2008 amateur entry draft, out of Mississippi State University.

The pick was weird… Flagg played three seasons with Mississippi State and only had a total of 154 at bats over the three seasons. This included only 39 hits, so you do the math. He definitely, on the surface, didn’t deserve the pick.

From college website: CAREER: Enters his junior campaign with a .288 career batting average, 13 extra-base hits and a .490 slugging percentage • Continues MSU’s string of players from Jacksonville Bishop Kenny High School… this is a college career bio?

Flagg played the 2008 season for the GCL Mets, going .223/.331/.417 in 139 at bats (5 HRs, 25 RBIs).

Flagg played most of the 2009 season with Kingsport, putting up impressive numbers: .301/.365/.500/.865. This was a considerable higher OPS than anything he had done in college. He also LED THE League in runs batted in.

Flagg went on to get a cup of coffee at Savannah (.174 in 23 at bats).

Forecast: Basically, no one that writes about the Mets knew anything about Flagg before the beginning of this season, and he’s far from being tagged a prospect, but he definitely has earned himself a bump up for his 2009 season. I tried to find out the name of the scout that told someone in Queens that this kid was worth a draft pick. So far, he’s a genius.
I wrote on 2-10-10: Jeff Flagg – Jeff had an outstanding year for rookie-Kingsport, going .301/.365/.500/.865, 10-HR, 59-RBI, in only 226-AB. He ended the season with the Sand Gnats which is exactly where he will start the 2010 season. Love the body… 6-6, 246.

5-30-10 from: - At 6′6″ Jeff is a big dude who can mash. He pulverized the ball for 10 bombs last year, also hitting .301. He did return to the bench after striking out 71 times after only 57 games last year. At Savannah he is still swinging and missing (40 K’s in 27 games), scuffling to find his stroke (.162) with only one homerun. He almost has as many walks (11) as hits (17).
