Staten Island 2, Brooklyn 1

from press release:

The Brooklyn Cyclones lost a heartbreaker in the bottom of the 10th inning to their archrival Staten Island Yankees Friday night, 2-1.

Each team tallied a run in the first inning, but that would be the only scoring done until the 10th inning. Yankees’ first baseman Kyle Roller hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th off of Johan Figuereo, scoring Eduardo Sosa, to beat Brooklyn for the second straight night.

Relief pitcher A.J. Pinera was charged with the loss, while Preston Claiborne earned the victory for Staten Island after pitching two strong innings out of the bullpen.

Cyclones’ starter Mitch Houck continued to establish himself as the team’s ace with a seven-inning performance, allowing just an unearned run, four hits and two walks. The lefty struck out four Yankees, and saw his ERA drop to 0.87 through 20.2 innings pitched.

Hamilton Bennett pitched two scoreless innings in relief for Brooklyn. The South Carolina-native struck out three hitters and allowed two walks.

Centerfielder Darrell Ceciliani went 1-for-3, dropping his league-leading average to .414. More importantly, Ceciliani earned two walks, although one was intentional, raising his on-base percentage to .460. He now has five walks on the season, with all of them coming in the past four games.

First baseman Jeff Flagg had two hits, raising his average to .322. Third baseman Joe Bonfe went 1-for-2 with three walks for the Cyclones. Bonfe is batting .366.

The Cyclones will try to avoid the three-game sweep tomorrow night, as the series finale takes place at MCU Park in Brooklyn. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
