Miquel Batista, Matt Harvey, Chris Schwinden, Mike Pelfrey, Juan Urbina

Miquel Batista:

Batista was released by the Cards because two recent games ended with Batista walking the winning run in. So, why do you sign
a 40-year old that can still toss it 92? Sounds to me like something a team would do when they are looking for a cheap alternative to their current high priced closer…

Matt Harvey:

7-3-11: - http://metsmerizedonline.com/2011/07/best-mets-minor-league-surprises-mid-season-edition.html  - Matt Harvey – Binghamton, the 6’4″ right hander, who was the 2010 first round draft pick, made his professional debut this season, starting the year in St. Lucie, and earning a recent promotion to AA. His first start at Bingo was shaky, his second was much better as he begins to settle into the Eastern League. Here are the St Lucie stats that got him called up to the next level: in 14 starts he went 8-2 with a 2.37 ERA. 76 IP, 67 H, 92 K, 24 BB, .238 BA against. Yes that is correct, 92 K’s in 76 IP.

Chris Schwinden:

7-4-11: - http://mets360.com/?p=7171&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Mets360%2Ffeed+%28Mets360+Feed%29  - In his last start, Schwinden threw seven shutout innings against Lehigh Valley, and allowed four hits and no walks. He struck out eight batters and ran his scoreless innings streak to 15.2 IP. Schwinden got a no-decision in the game, as Buffalo lost 2-0. But even though he did not get rewarded with the win, there’s no doubting how well he has pitched this season. In his last four games, Schwinden has allowed 5 ER in 25.2 IP (1.75 ERA) and has allowed 6 BB and notched 25 Ks. In Friday’s game against the Iron Pigs, Schwinden retired the first 10 batters he faced and ended his outing by setting down his final eight hitters

Mike Pelfrey:

Mike Pelfrey has surrendered home runs in six straight starts and has given up 15 HR in 100.2 IP this season. He has a 10.7 HR/FB ratio and a 1.34 HR/9 mark, both career-worst numbers. Pelfrey has typically been very stingy with the long ball throughout his career and needs a low HR/FB, one below 7.0, rate to be successful. xFIP calculates all pitchers with a normalized HR rate. Since Pelfrey typically has a lower than average HR/FB mark, his xFIPs are above his FIPs. But this year, with all of the HR allowed, it’s the exact opposite, with his xFIP (4.43) lower than his FIP (4.75) which just uses the actual HR rate of the pitcher. - http://mets360.com/?p=7176&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Mets360%2Ffeed+%28Mets360+Feed%29

Juan Urbina:

7-4-11: - http://metsmerizedonline.com/2011/07/mets-farm-report-july-3rd-2011-cory-mazzoni-debuts.html   - Another terrible outing from Juan Urbina. For the third straight start he failed to make it to the 5th inning. He didn’t give up many hits today, but displayed poor command once more. Chad Zurcher is going for the .400 average again, sitting at a pretty .379 and a near .500 OBP.
