Brent Clevlen gave the R-Phils an early lead with a three-run double in the third inning. It was the first of four hits on the night for the Reading new-comer. Raul Reyes launched his ninth homer of the year in the third off starter Joe Esposito. Binghamton scraped back with two more off Esposito in the sixth, but it was not enough. Read-ing tacked on two more off Carson in the fourth, added a pair of insurance tallies against Rhiner Cruz, and plated two more off Brad Holt in the eighth. The B-Mets had the bases loaded in the seventh and eighth, but failed to score any runs. Justin Friend closed things out with a perfect ninth inning.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Jeurys Familia makes his 12th start with Binghamton and first against the Reading Phillies. In his first start since returning from the disabled list, Familia allowed four runs on four hits in a loss to the Altoona Curve on August 2. The right-hander lasted just an inning and two-thirds, the second-shortest outing of his pro career.
RHP Tyson Brummett will make his 25th appearance with Reading and seventh start. The Mississippi native started the season in the R-Phils bullpen and made two spot starts in April and May before being moved into the rotation in late June. Brummett made one relief appearance with Lehigh Valley (AAA) in April before enjoying a lengthier stay in their rotation in late June and early July. The righty went 1-4 with a 5.82 ERA with the IronPigs before returning to Reading on July 26. He has made two starts since his return, going 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA.
CROWDED SCORESHEET: The Reading Phillies sent 45 batters to the plate over nine innings last night. They collected ten hits, walked eight times, and were the beneficiaries of two B-Mets errors. The R-Phils had at least two men on base in six innings.
A TIDY DAY OF WORK: B-Mets reliever Ricky Brooks needed just four pitches to work a perfect ninth inning last night. Since returning from the disabled list on July 16, Brooks has made eight appearances, allowed just seven hits, and tossed 10.2 scoreless innings.
IN A PINCH: B-Mets utility fielder Mike Fisher came through with a pinch-hit single last night. It was the second consecutive night Fisher has singled as a pinch-hitter. He is 2-for-3 coming off the bench this season.
